French "fairytale" Chateau with 25.000 owners celebrates Christmas
Co-owners watch fireworks during the Christmas party at the Chateau de La Mothe Chandeniers in Les Trois-Moutiers, France, December 7, 2019. The Wider Image: Seafarers' pilgrimage to MacDara's Island
It is said that people don't come home for Christmas to the small western Irish village of Carna, they come back for St. MacDara's Day. On that day, every July 16, hundreds make a pilgrimage off the coast of Gaelic-speaking Carna to tiny, uninhabited St. MacDara's Island, a celebration of mass and blessing of boats. It will keep them safe throughout the year, locals believe. St. MacDara, the patron saint of seafarers, is believed to have built the small church on the island in the sixth century. After mass, the locally crafted boats, known as Galway Hookers, bow their sails in the direction of the church three times to bless the year ahead. Wider Image: Christmas trees around the world
A Christmas tree is seen at a roundabout in Victoria Island district in Lagos, Nigeria, December 9, 2015. The humble Christmas tree has a rich history, from evergreen trees used to symbolise eternal life in Ancient Egypt to tree worship among pagan Europeans. The modern version has its origins in Germany, where the song "O Tannenbaum" is still a festive favourite. Today the traditional tree with lights and decorations appears in cities including Washington, Moscow and Beirut. Alternative constructions range from recycled rubbish in Mexico City to old window frames in Rakvere, Estonia. Whatever the shape or size, the message is the same: Merry Christmas. Justin, the 3 year-old son of Cuban migrants, plays with a Christmas ornament while sitting on a mattress at a shelter in Liberia, Costa Rica, November 26, 2015. Thousands of Cubans remain stuck on the Costa Rican side of the border with Nicaragua after Managua refused at a regional summit on Tuesday to open its doors to a wave of migrants heading for the United States. Fearing the recent rapprochement between Havana and Washington could end preferential U.S. policies for Cuban migrants, thousands of people from the Communist-ruled island have been crossing into South America and traveling through Central America hoping to reach U.S. soil.
