Wider Image: In Pursuit Of The American Dream
Jeff Williamson (L) and Terra Green search for coats in a Salvation Army store in Williston, North Dakota January 13, 2015. They arrived in Williston earlier that day in search of work in the Bakken oil field. The Salvation Army gave them clothing and food vouchers since they did not have enough to weather the frigid North Dakota winter. Like so many before them, Terra Green, Jeff Williamson and Bazileo Hernandez came to North Dakota's oil country seeking a better life. They just came too late. Itinerant, unskilled workers could as recently as last spring show up in the No. 2 U.S. oil producing state and vie for salaries north of $100,000 per year with guaranteed housing. The steep drop in oil prices has changed that. After trying unsuccessfully for over a month to find work, the friends decided to leave Williston. A customer selects clothes at a street stall at the business area of Jiaozuo, China's central Henan province, December 20, 2012. Economists who believe China's rebalancing is underway say population trends and income growth are only part of what will trigger a sustained increase in consumption's share of the overall economy. Rising disposable incomes coincide with a change in psychology among younger consumers - a shift that means when it comes to money and spending they are decidedly not their parents. A picture of shoemaker Antonio Arellano giving Pope Benedict XVI (L) a pair of red shoes is displayed in his shop in downtown Rome February 14, 2013. Far from the designer stores on the other side of the Tiber, Arellano's shop, with its smell of glue and racks of shoe polish, is unremarkable, except for the fact that, due to its location, he counts Benedict as a loyal customer. With Benedict set to retire to an apartment inside the Vatican City, Arellano hopes he will remain his customer, even if the pope no longer visits in person. A member of the "Community Police", run by local residents of towns to police their communities, stands guard at an installed checkpoints on the roads outside in the town of El Mezon, near Ayutla de los Libres in the Costa Chica (small coast) region of the southern state of Guerrero January 31, 2013. Residents of Ayutla de los Libres took up arms three weeks ago to patrol and defend their communities from organised crimes and gangs that have plagued the region. Wielding machetes and rusty shotguns, a motley crew in facemasks escorts dozens of prisoners accused of crimes ranging from robbery to dismemberment onto a basketball court to face public trial: Wild West justice Mexican style. Outraged at relentless extortion, kidnapping and theft by criminals amid a wave of drug-related violence racking Mexico, farmers, shopkeepers and citizens in the mountainous western state of Guerrero have taken the law into their own hands as "community police". according to members.
