A taxi passes a gas station in Falls Church
A taxi passes a gas station in Falls Church, Virginia December 16, 2014. For the first time in more than a decade, U.S. gasoline prices are tumbling toward $2 a gallon even as the economy grows and unemployment shrinks, a constellation that will test the theory that domestic fuel demand is in terminal decline.
Conventional wisdom holds that structural changes such as increased fuel efficiency, greater urbanization and a graying population that have taken hold since the financial crisis will temper any potential pick-up in U.S. fuel consumption next year, despite the unanticipated arrival of half-priced fuel.

The 59 stars shine as part of the backwards-painted zodiac set in gold leaf constellations span the ceiling of the main concourse of Grand Central Terminal in New York, January 25, 2013. It plays host hundreds of thousands of visitors each day, had an extensive facelift in the 1990s and was nearly demolished about 55 years ago, but Grand Central Terminal survived and is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Guzman and Cervantes are homeless but stick together in an effort to keep their children together as a family, and not taken away and separated in foster homes. This image of the Orion nebula, taken by NASA's Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescopes and released November 7, 2006, shows an infrared and visible-light composite that indicates that a "gang" of four monstrously massive stars at the center of the cloud may be the main culprits of mayhem in the familiar Orion constellation. The stars are collectively called the "Trapezium" and can be communally identified as the yellow smudge near the center of the image. Swirls of green in Hubble's ultraviolet and visible-light view reveal hydrogen and sulfur gas that have been heated and ionized by intense ultraviolet radiation from the Trapezium's stars. Resembling a diamond-encrusted bracelet, a ring of brilliant blue star clusters wraps around the yellowish nucleus of what was once a normal spiral galaxy in this new image released on April 22, 2004 from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST). [This image is being released to commemorate the 14th anniversary of Hubble's launch on April 24, 1990 and its deployment from the space shuttle Discovery on April 25, 1990. The sparkling blue ring is 150,000 light-years in diameter, making it larger than our entire home galaxy, the Milky Way. The galaxy, cataloged as AM 0644-741, is a member of the class of so-called "ring galaxies." It lies 300 million light-years away in the direction of the southern constellation Dorado.]

Image shows composite image of Elephant's Trunk Nebula, an elongated dark globule within the emission nebula IC 1396 in the constellation of Cepheus, one of the first images from the new Spitzer Space Telescope released by NASA on December 18, 2003. The new Spitzer Space Telescope, that looks at the cosmos with infrared detectors, has lifted the dust veils from newborn stars and a bumptious comet, and revealed the detail in the spiral arms of a neighboring galazy. Unlike the [Hubble Space Telescope], which takes pictures of the universe from high in Earth orbit, Spitzer makes its observations as it trails behind Earth as our planet circles the sun. ??? REMNANTS FROM A STAR THAT EXPLODED THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO.
Remnants from a star that exploded thousands of years ago created a
celestial abstract portrait, as captured in this NASA Hubble Space
Telescope image of the Pencil Nebula. Officially known as NGC 2736, the
Pencil Nebula is part of the huge Vela supernova remnant, located in
the southern constellation Vela. Discovered by Sir John Herschel in the
1840s, the nebula's linear appearance triggered its popular name. The
nebula's shape suggests that it is part of the supernova shock wave
that recently encountered a region of dense gas. It is this interaction
that causes the nebula to glow, appearing like a rippled sheet.
