PEOPLE WATCH FOR LEONID METEORS AT ECHO BAY MARINA AIRSTRIP IN NEVADA.
From left, Omar Carrillo, 20, Naida Mesa, 16, and Miriam Luna, 23, all
of Las Vegas, Nevada, bundle up as they scan the sky for Leonid meteors
while they lie on the Echo Bay Marina Airstrip in the Lake Mead
National Recreation Area, about 20 miles northeast of Las Vegas, in the
early morning hours of November 19, 2002. The meteor shower is a result
of the earth's orbit passing through debris from the comet
Temple-Tuttle. The streaking light show is caused by small pieces of
the comet burning up as they hit the atmosphere at over 160,000 mph.
The meteor shower is visible every mid-November and gets its name from
the fact that the meteors appear to radiate from a point in the
constellation Leo. REUTERS/Ethan Miller

The Hubble Space Telescope has captured the rainbow-hued "fireworks" of an old supernova whose dying light first reached Earth some 320 years ago, scientists said on July 3, 2002. [The new image shows red, white, blue, pink and green gas streamers issuing from Cassiopeia A, the remnants of a massive star in the constellation Cassiopeia, named after an Ethiopian queen. The colors highlight parts of the debris where chemical elements are glowing. The dark blue fragments, for example, are richest in oxygen, the red material is rich in sulfur.]

A Sun-like star just out of infancy has winked at astronomers, indicating its eclipse by cosmic dust and rocks, the stuff of which planets like Earth could possibly form, scientists reported June 19, 2002. The star, located in the Unicorn constellation about 2,400 light-years from Earth, disappeared from view for regular periods of about 48 days over the past six years. Image shows an illustration of a possible model of what this eclipse may look like.
