HUBBLE TELESCOPE IMAGE OF EDGE ON GALAXY NGC 4013.
The Hubble telescope has snapped this remarkable view of a perfectly "edge-on" galaxy, NGC 4013. This new Hubble picture, taken in January, 2001, reveals with exquisite detail huge clouds of dust and gas extending along, as well as far above, the galaxy's main disk. NGC 4013 is a spiral galaxy, similar to our Milky Way, lying some 55 million light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Ursa Major. Viewed face-on, it would look like a nearly circular pinwheel, but NGC 4013 happens to be seen edge-on from our vantage point. Even at 55 million light-years, the galaxy is larger than Hubble's field of view, and the image shows only a little more than half of the object, albeit with unprecedented detail.

- FILE PHOTO 13APR99 - Resembling a swirling witch's cauldron of glowing vapors, the black hole-powered core of a nearby active galaxy appears in this colorful NASA Hubble Space Telescope image taken April 10, 1999. The galaxy lies 13 million light-years away in the southern constellation Circinus. This galaxy is designated a type 2 Seyfert, a class of mostly spiral galaxies that have compact centers and are believed to contain massive black holes. Seyfert galaxies are themselves part of a larger class of objects called Active Galactic Nuclei or AGN. AGN have the ability to remove gas from the centers of their galaxies by blowing it out into space at phenomenal speeds. Astronomers studying the Circinus galaxy are seeing evidence of a powerful AGN at the center of this galaxy as well.

Image recently released by NASA taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of the Crab Nebula. Located about 6,500 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Taurus, the Crab Nebula is the remnant of a star that began its life with about 10 times the mass of our own Sun. Such a massive star consumes its nuclear fuel so rapidly that it lives only some 50 million years before exploding as a supernova. For the Crab star, the end came on July 4, 1054. The explosion was witnessed as a naked-eye "Guest Star" by Chinese astronomers, and is also depicted in rock paintings of Native Americans in the southwestern United States. Lieutenant Ron Candiloro, assigned to Fighter Squadron One Five One, breaks the sound barrier in an F/A-18 Hornet fighter plane. The phenomenon is created when the plane, travelling at low altitudes over water, approaches the speed of sound and the pressure created by the forward sound waves squeezes moisture in the air to form a ball of cloud over the front of the aircraft. The USS Constellation battlegroup today arrived at the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, Japan.

NASA SPACE TELESCOPE IMAGE OF ACTIVE GALAXY.
Resembling a swirling witch's cauldron of glowing vapors, the black hole-powered core of a nearby active galaxy appears in this colorful NASA Hubble Space Telescope image taken April 10, 1999.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured these images of disks of dust and gaseous jets around young stars, 450 light-years away in the constellation Taurus, giving astronomers some specific information about how planets may be formed. The green areas represent gaseous jets emitted by the stars when the dust clouds surround and puor into the star.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured these images of young stars, 450 light-years away in the constellation Taurus, giving astronomers some specific information about how planets may be formed from these collections of dust particles and stellar disks. Most of the nebulae shown represent small dust particles around the stars, which are seen because they are reflecting starlight. The regions of greatest dust concentration appear red.

The Hubble Space Telescope has captured the sharpest view yet of M57, the Ring Nebula in Lyra, which is the most famous of all planetary nebulae. In this image released January 6, the telescope has looked down a tunnel of gas cast off by a dying star thousands of years ago. This photo reveals elongated dark clumps of material embedded in the gas at the edge of the nebula, and the dying central star floating in a blue haze of hot gas. The nebula is about a light-year in diameter, and is located some 2,000 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Lyra. The colors are approximately true colors, and represent three different chemical elements: helium (blue), oxygen (green), and nitrogen (red).

A newly discovered massive planet could be orbiting a star outside our solar system, Swiss astronomers in Chile reported on November 24. The suspected planet is believed to be circling one of a pair of stars in the southern constellation Eridanus (The River). The star, known as Gliese 86, is a bit smaller and dimmer than the Sun, but because it is so close in cosmic terms -- 35 light-years -- it can be seen with unaided eyes from Earth. The planet cannot be seen, but astronomers working at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory in Chile, whose 1.2-m Swiss Leonard Euler telescope is shown in an undated file photo, believe it exists because Gliese 86 is wobbling in space.

Sparkling like jewels on black velvet, some of the most distant galaxies in the universe went on display November 23 in new images of a tiny patch of the southern sky snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope. Training its most far-sighted instruments to a point near the constellation Tucana, the Hubble spied thousands of galaxies ranged along a corridor in deep space some 12 billion light-years long. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, or about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion kms). The observation called the Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) doubles the number of far-flung galaxies available to astronomers for deciphering the history of the universe.

A VENDOR TRIES TO SELL A TELESCOPE IN BEIJING.
A street vendor tries to sell a Russian-made telescope to passers-by on the eve of a meteor storm in the constellation Leo November 16. The storm is expected to occur Tuesday night in China, and will be the first such storm visible in the eastern hemisphere for the past century. A meteor storm in Leo was first recorded by the Chinese in 902 AD, formed by solid fragments of cosmic debris. The phenomenon occurs approximately every 32 to 33 years.
