A crew member of NGO Proactiva Open Arms rescue boat embraces Josepha from Cameroon in central Mediterranean Sea, July 17, 2018. Reuters photographer Juan Medina: "As our rescue boat sighted the wreck of a raft, we saw a woman making an effort to wave, so we knew at least there was life there. It soon became clear she was the only survivor. Face down amid a bunch of loose planks and deflated rubber lay the corpse of a woman in a striped T-shirt and trousers. She had been dead for some time. And there was a four-year-old boy who the boat's doctors said had died just hours before. The survivor was brought aboard in a state of deep shock and treated by doctors. She gave only her first name, Josepha, and said she was from Cameroon. She told doctors she had spent the previous night clinging to the wreckage, singing hymns and praying for deliverance. She would not tell us anything else about herself or the other passengers on the raft, nor did she say how it wrecked. The crew lifted the two dead bodies onto the deck, covered and put them on ice. There was general sadness and the feeling of powerlessness, but also joy at having found Josepha alive. Had we arrived a few hours later, she could have been dead. We've done two rescues during my 29 days on the flagship rescue boat of the Spanish charity Proactiva Open Arms. The retired tugboat, built in 1973, patrolled the Mediterranean off Libya's coast to rescue migrants trying to cross to Europe." REUTERS/Juan Medina SEARCH "POY STORY" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Violence leaves lasting marks among Rio victims' families
On the morning of April 8, 12-year-old Eduarda Lopes watched as her mother, Valdilene da Silva, was shot by a stray bullet in Rio de Janeiro's Manguinhos slum, one of the countless innocent victims of rising gangland violence in the city. As she lay dying in a puddle of blood, Silva used her last breaths to tell her daughter to run and hide. But despite her fear of being killed, Lopes stayed with her mother. "I waited with her until the final moment, by her side," Lopes told Reuters, as tears streamed down her face. "I couldn't bear it," Lopes said, of when she got to see her mother's corpse later that day. "I saw her lying there and she looked like a doll, asleep. The only thing I could take with me were the earrings she was wearing." Brazil's violence is spiking and ever more victims are caught in the crossfire of gangs warring with each other or police. Rio de Janeiro state registered over 4,500 murders during the first eight months of 2018, up 6 percent compared with the same period in 2017. More than 1,000 people died in confrontations with police in the state between January and August, official data shows, up over 50 percent on the same period in 2017. Authorities say those killed are mostly suspected drug gang members, while critics allege innocent people are also slain. The Wider Image: Woman digs for family lost under Guatemalan volcano
Eleven days after the Fuego volcano rained down on the Guatemalan village of San Miguel Los Lotes, a backhoe ripped the roof off one of the homes buried by ash, revealing a corpse in the still-hot dust. "It's my sister Lola," said Eufemia Garcia Ixpata, a 48-year-old fruit vendor who lost dozens of family members in the eruption. Mexican volunteer rescue workers grabbed their shovels and rushed in to recover the body from the rubble and dust. Garcia ran to find a sheet of paper and a marker to prepare a name tag before the body was taken to a grade school that was being used as a makeshift morgue. She had lost her family and her home, and had been sleeping in a school room with other survivors. Reuters photographer Carlos Jasso accompanied her for seven days.
