A visitor (R) collects prizes at a counter at Dynam's pachinko parlour in Honjo, north of Tokyo August 4, 2014. Japan's once-booming pachinko industry, grappling with a greying customer base and the threat of new competition from casinos, is adopting a softer touch and smoke-free zones to lure a new generation of players, particularly women. Pachinko, a modified version of pinball, is a fading national obsession, with about 12,000 parlours nation-wide and one in thirteen people playing the game. But that figure is declining as the population shrinks and younger people prefer games on their mobile phones. Picture taken August 4, 2014. REUTERS/Issei Kato (JAPAN - Tags: SOCIETY BUSINESS)

Sam's Meat Market & More employee Steve Sumad rubs his neck as he surveys damage caused by looters the night before in Ferguson, Missouri, August 16, 2014. Tensions had temporarily cooled on Thursday night but by Friday evening, protesters were again swarming through a residential and retail district in the small town outside St. Louis that has become the site of repeated clashes between protestors and police forces. The unrest erupted after Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, 28, shot and killed Brown shortly after noon last Saturday as Brown and a friend walked down a street that runs through an apartment complex where Brown's grandmother lives. Customers queue to pay for groceries at a supermarket in Bangkok June 28, 2014. Thai households are among the most indebted in Asia, and the official figures understate the problem due to the large sums also owed to loan sharks - estimated at as much as $74 billion. When the army seized power on May 22 it justified the coup partly by the need to fix an economy driven to the brink of recession by seven months of political turmoil. But the growing debt problem leaves the central bank little scope to cut rates to support growth, while exports remain sluggish. Picture taken June 28, 2014. Cahyani Ariya Wiji, a 21-year-old Muslim foreign student from Indonesia, picks a bowl of cut fruits at the halal section of a dining hall in the Kanda University of International studies, in Chiba, east of Tokyo May 13, 2014. In the last few years, growing middle-class wealth has spawned a new genre of Muslim travellers who pursue leisurely escapes to atypical destinations like Japan, China and Thailand. The tallest hurdle for these new destinations is convincing Muslim tourists that the food they consume is halal. A recent survey shows that Japan has exhibited the greatest effort among 60 travel destinations in making itself Muslim-friendly over the past year. From publishing a travel guide for Muslims to installing prayer rooms at some airports, Japan is fast working its way up an annual halal vacation poll. The big increase in Muslim travellers highlights the urgency for non-Muslim countries to be more halal-compliant. To match story HALAL-FOOD/MALAYSIA Picture taken May 13, 2014. The center, located in a back-street of Caracas, is frequented by the unemployed and homeless, as well as those who work but are unable to make ends meet. Shortages of basic products have become the norm in Venezuela over the last year and workers at soup kitchens face an increasingly difficult task of finding staple foods they need to provide a free hot daily meal. Opponents of Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro's government say the queues are a national embarrassment and symbol of failed socialist economics similar to the old Soviet Union. Travellers pass through passport control to enter the northern Cyprus in central Nicosia March 13, 2014. Across the island of Cyprus there are six border crossings allowing movement between the north and the south of the island. There are passport controls on the borders, although the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not officially recognised by the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council. People cross the borders for both work and leisure and both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can move freely. This year marks 40 years since the Cyprus National Guard staged a coup in Cyprus and the subsequent Turkish military intervention, which escalated a civil war between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities on the island. After the ceasefire, a heavily restricted U.N.-controlled buffer zone between the north and south of the island was put into operation. It stretches 180 km (112 miles) across the whole island measuring 7.4 km (4.6 miles) at its widest and 3.3 m (11 feet) at its narrowest point. It is restricted to the general public and no Greek or Turkish Cypriots are allowed inside. Picture taken March 13, 2014. REUTERS/Neil Hall (CYPRUS - Tags: POLITICS SOCIETY ANNIVERSARY)

Participants of the "Your Weight in Gold" contest receive their gold prizes in Dubai November 7, 2013. The Dubai government launched "Your Weight in Gold", a 30-day weight-loss challenge in July, paying residents in gold for losing extra pounds as part of a government campaign to fight growing obesity in the Gulf Arab emirate. The top three dieters stood a chance to win gold coins worth up to 20,000 dirhams ($5,400), and a contestant has to lose a minimum 2 kgs (4.4 pounds) to qualify for the contest. Soft culture is just as important as hard politics and cash to Seoul. K-Pop, the carefully choreographed dance music showcased by bands like "Girls' Generation" had sales worth $3.4 billion, according to U.S. show business magazine Billboard. A woman buys tortillas made by soldiers outside Miramar II residential park in Acapulco, October 2, 2013. Gangland violence and looming bankruptcy had already all but obliterated the glitter of Acapulco before catastrophic flooding last month drove crocodiles onto the streets of the Mexican beach resort and turned much of it into a mud bath. When the rains began on the night of September 15, many in Miramar II, an estate of small second homes near some of the most expensive hotels in the city, were settling down to watch Mexican boxing hero Saul Alvarez take on world champion Floyd Mayweather. By dawn, Alvarez's hopes had been crushed and Miramar II was underwater. To match Story MEXICO-ACAPULCO Picture taken October 2, 2013.
