A man mourns the victims of the dictatorship outside the Victor Jara Stadium, formerly a detention center during the days of the coup, in Santiago, September 12, 2000. Chileans recalled the 27th anniversary of Augusto Pinochet's coup d'etat, remembering the more than 3,000 victims who either died or disappeared because of political violence during the 1973-1990 military rule. The stadium is named after Chilean musician Victor Jara who was arrested by members of the army and taken to the stadium according to eye witnesses. Jara's body was found outside the Metropolitan Cemetery on September 15 with 44 bullet wounds in it.

Chilean school students listen as their teacher talks about the coup d'etat from 1973 during a class on contemporary Chilean history at a local public school in Santiago, September 7, 2000. It has been 27 years since the coup took place, but it was only this year that education authorities for the first time began to tackle the topic in schoolbooks. Most textbooks about Chilean history will show only few paragraphes to a "military intervention" but references to the more than 3,000 people who died or disappeared because of political violence during the 1973-1990 dictatorship.
