The Wider Image: Former 'crackland' addict turns trash into livelihood
Fabiana Silva called the streets of Sao Paulo home for 16 years as one of hundreds of people trapped in cracolandia, the open-air drug markets in South America's biggest city. Now the street has become a livelihood for Silva, who has kicked an addiction to crack cocaine and moved into an informal two-story dwelling in a nearby slum. Silva, 38, pulls her bright purple cart by hand through Sao Paulo, piling it high with more than 400 kg of recyclables picked from refuse to earn roughly 100 reais ($32) per day - the only money she earns to support three children. "The street today puts food on my table," she said. REUTERS/Nacho Doce SEARCH "NACHO RECYCLING" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY. Teacher Joana de Assis guides a girl with a position during a ballet lesson at the New Dreams dance studio in the Luz neighborhood known to locals as Cracolandia (Crackland) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, August 12, 2015. For the young girls learning to jump and plie, the dance studio provides a way forward and out of the difficult environment they have grown up in. "We take them off the streets, sometimes from their houses in the slums and we bring them here where they can bathe, eat, put on their ballet clothes and do a dance class. We give them a dance class, we give them love and affection," says dance teacher and project leader, Joana de Assis. Brazil is one of the world's highest consuming countries of crack cocaine, and Cracolandia, or "Crack Land", located in the outskirts of Sao Paulo, is one of the most intense and brutal hubs. Young girls play with a volunteer before taking ballet lessons at the New Dreams dance studio in the Luz neighborhood known to locals as Cracolandia (Crackland) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, August 14, 2015. For the young girls learning to jump and plie, the dance studio provides a way forward and out of the difficult environment they have grown up in. Brazil is one of the world's highest consuming countries of crack cocaine, and Cracolandia, or "Crack Land", located in the outskirts of Sao Paulo, is one of the most intense and brutal hubs. Samples of pipes for crack cocaine and methamphetamine use sit inside the jacket pocket of Shilo Murphy, executive director of the People's Harm Reduction Alliance, the nation's largest needle-exchange program, in Seattle, Washington April 30, 2015. The People's Harm Reduction Alliance launched its free meth pipe program, which is pioneering but illegal, in March after learning from its own survey that 80 percent of area meth users would be less likely to inject drugs if given access to pipes. The theory behind the Alliance's handout program is that giving meth pipes to drug users may steer some away from needles, which are far riskier than smoking, especially if the user is sharing with another person infected with HIV or hepatitis C. There is little scientific evidence to support that claim, but the Alliance, a privately funded needle-swap group run by drug users, said it has distributed more than 1,000 pipes in Seattle in a matter of weeks and could expand to other cities in Washington state and Oregon. Opponents say giving away meth pipes discourages quitting while wasting resources on an untested scheme that will not solve a city-wide health problem. Picture taken April 30, 2015.
