REVELLERS CELEBRATE AT THE ANNUAL COON CARNIVAL.
FOR RELEASE WITH STORY BC-SAFRICA SLAVERY - Revellers celebrate in the streets of Cape Town at the annual Coon Carnival, the commemoration of an old slave holiday, in this January 1996 file picture. Now the city is promoting it's slave heritage and a Slave Route tour has been established. Many of the city's mixed-race residents are descendants of slaves brought to the Cape last century by the Dutch authorities from the Far East, and the slave heritage lives on in the cusine, language and culture of the Cape.
