The Wider Image: Darfur's hopeful 12-year-olds
Yousif Abdu Al Rahman poses for a photograph in Aboshouk camp in Darfur, Sudan, November 17, 2015. Born in the camp, 12-year-old Yousif wishes to be an engineer or a journalist in his adulthood. The conflict in Sudan's Darfur region that erupted 12 years ago shows no sign of ending. But it hasn't stopped displaced youngsters, some of whom have spent their entire lives in refugee camps, from dreaming big. Twelve children aged 12 explain their hopes and dreams for the future; ambitions include becoming a doctor, an engineer and a teacher. Moussa, a migrant from Darfour, poses in front of his tent in the "New Jungle" makeshift camp as unseasonably cool temperatures arrive in Calais, northern France, October 16, 2015. The number of migrants in the Calais camp on France's north coast has doubled to close to 6,000 people, the prefect for the region said on Friday. Migrants and refugees are camped in Calais, fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia and now living in the jungle. Most of them are hoping to make the crossing to England. Sudanese from the Bedouin ethnic group ride their camels near the collection site for Trona, a natural form of sodium carbonate minerals, from Oasis Natron in Malha, a town in Sudan's North Darfur, February 14, 2015. Trona crystallizes into a glass-like hard rocky substance as result of chemical reactions when natural forms of sodium carbonate minerals settle on water, and is used in the manufacturing of glass, chemicals, and in the production of textiles.
