The Wider Image: Death in San Salvador
Sellers withdraw their produce as police investigators secure a crime scene at La Tiendona market in San Salvador, July 2, 2015. Miguel Angel Acevedo was killed by suspected gang members while he was selling potatoes at La Tiendona market, one of the most violent places in San Salvador, according to local media. In El Salvador the number of homicides surged 70 percent last year, making the central American nation among the most violent countries in the world. Violence and murders have risen steadily since a 2012 truce between the two main street gangs began to fall apart. Months of reporting show killings in the suburbs of the capital, San Salvador, where powerful gangs known as maras control entire neighbourhoods. A street vendor selling toys arranges his goods near a picture of Pope John Paul II after the Way of the Cross procession on Good Friday in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, southern Poland April 18, 2014. The boom in pope-related merchandise is just one measure of the abiding appeal of Pope John Paul, who reigned for nearly 27 years before his death in 2007 and whose trips around the world made him the most visible pontiff in history. If for the rest of the world's Roman Catholics he is a model of religious devotion, for Poles he also doubles as a political icon credited with helping to bring down the Iron Curtain and free Poland from Communist rule imposed from Moscow. A street vendor sings a prayer during a wake for Silvia Dinora Rivera in the market stall where Rivera used to work with her mother, in La Libertad in San Salvador June 22, 2013. Rivera was 37 years old when her husband tied her to a chair, poured gasoline over her and set fire to the house. She later died in the hospital. Central America encompasses some of the countries with the world's highest rates of femicide, defined as the murder of a woman for reasons connected with her gender. El Salvador has the highest incidence of femicide in the world, and Guatemala has the third highest rate, according to a study published by the NGO, The Academic Council on the United Nations System. According to UN Women, in Honduras femicide is thought to be the second most common cause of death among women of reproductive age. The organisation also states that an average of two women are murdered every day in Guatemala. November 25 marks the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. A street vendor passes a coffin made in the shape of a fish at the workshop of Kane Kwei in the Teshi area of Accra, May 16, 2013. From fish-shaped coffins to slaughtered bulls, funerals in Africa are lavish affairs, providing a lucrative opportunity for insurance companies looking for business in some of the world's fastest growing economies. Many of the insurance industry's big money-spinners in developed markets, like motor insurance and cover for household goods, are irrelevant to the majority of Africans who cannot afford a range of expensive personal possessions. But high death rates and low savings levels mean funeral insurance is proving an easier sell among people daunted by the cost of ceremonies that can stretch to several months of income. A salesman watches protesters and riot police from the entrance to his shop during clashes in the village of Sanabis, west of Manama, February 22, 2013. Protesters gathered near the village waiting for the body of 20-year old Bahraini Mahmoud Jaziri to be released from hospital. Jaziri died on Friday from injuries suffered during clashes with security forces, the Gulf's main opposition movement Al Wefaq said, but the government said there was no evidence police were responsible. It was the second death reported since the protests on February 14, which marked the second anniversary of an uprising to demand democratic reforms in the U.S.-allied Gulf Arab state.
