The problem of jigger parasites, female sand fleas that burrow their way under skin, is widespread in the eastern, northern and northeastern parts of Uganda. Left untreated, the parasite can lead to secondary infections that can be fatal. NGO Sole Hope works with local and international volunteers to treat sufferers, removing the parasites either with safety pins or razor blades. A stack of clothes is seen at a garment factory near the collapsed Rana Plaza building in Savar, Bangladesh June 16, 2013. The April 24 collapse of the Rana Plaza complex, built on swampy ground outside Dhaka with several illegal floors, killed 1,132 workers and focused international attention on sometimes lax safety standards in Bangladesh's booming garment industry. At least five different Bangladesh agencies have dispatched teams to start inspecting the country's thousands of garment factories, but there has been little coordination between them. More than four million people, mostly women, work in Bangladesh's clothing sector, which is the country's largest employment generator, with annual exports worth $21 billion. A woman holds a shopping bag at a Zara shop in Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok June 29, 2011. As pop music blares from a Zara store in Bangkok, Suthip Nanthavong jostles with others for bargains that might disappear in days - from stylish thin-strap t-shirts selling for 490 baht ($16) to racks of blue-denim jeans. Some call it "fast fashion" retailing - the apparel sector's equivalent to fast-food. Across Asia, global brands are setting up shops as U.S. and European shoppers cut discretionary spending, burdened by rising prices and a weak economic outlook. Picture taken June 29. Anti-government protesters spell out their feelings towards Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak with stones left over from the recent rioting at Tahrir Square in Cairo February 6, 2011. Demonstrators camped out in Tahrir Square, which has become an epicentre for protest, and vowed to intensify their battle to oust Mubarak, but the 82-year-old president has said he will stay until September elections because the alternative is chaos. A man tries on a shirt while shopping at a clothing store in New York, December 14, 2010. Strong November retail sales lifted U.S. stocks on Tuesday on optimism about consumer spending, even as weak sales from a electronics bellwether showed some specialty retailers could be struggling. Sales at U.S. retailers rose more than expected in November, up for a fifth straight month and pointing to a firm recovery from recession. REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton (UNITED STATES - Tags: BUSINESS)
