AN INDONESIAN VILLAGER CARRIES A HEAVY LOAD OF ROCK CONTAINING ELEMENTS OF CALCIUM IN WONOGIRI.
An Indonesian villager carries a heavy load of rocks that contain elements of calcium from a traditional mine in the Wonogiri district of central Java February 19, 2001. Because of the rocky terrain, which makes it difficult to plant crops, the villagers are forced into the risky work of tunnelling into the surrounding hills to seek the rocks, which are later broken down and the calcium extracted for use in dental cement and cosmetics. A worker was killed in the area last year when a separate makeshift mine collapsed. Each worker gets around 7,500 rupiah ( $0.79) a day for their labour.
