The Wider Image: Around the world in 45 toilets
A makeshift shower cabin and toilet are seen atop a deserted hotel, where hundreds of migrants found temporary shelter on the Greek island of Kos, Greece, May 27, 2015. Some 2.4 billion people around the world don't have access to decent sanitation and more than a billion are forced to defecate in the open, risking disease and other dangers, according to the United Nations. The UN says that while there is sufficient fresh water on the planet for everyone, "bad economics and poor infrastructure" mean that every year millions of people - most of them children - die from diseases linked to poor sanitation, unhygienic living conditions and lack of clean water supplies. To mark World Toilet Day on November 19, Reuters photographers captured pictures of toilets in cities, towns and villages around the globe. Pedestrians pass an abandoned hotel in the tourist area of San Juan, Puerto Rico, July 18, 2015. Puerto Rico may sport palm trees, pristine beaches and glorious weather but its tourism industry is losing out to rival Caribbean islands - and that is holding the U.S. territory back at a time when its deeply troubled economy most needs a fillip. Hoteliers blame a variety of issues for Puerto Rico lagging in both the growth of visitors and hotel rooms: mandatory staff perks, high construction and electricity costs, as well as plenty of red tape. A visitor walks past a military sign (rear) that says "Homeland first" at an abandoned building in the deserted Yassiada in Marmara sea off Istanbul, Turkey, May 14, 2015. Turkey's Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu inaugurated the "Democracy and Freedom Islands" complex in Yassiada, where the military tribunals sentenced then-prime minister Adnan Menderes along with two of his ministers to death after the May 27, 1960 coup. The complex is expected to be completed in a year and will include a democracy martyrs monument, a democracy museum, a hotel, conference hall, cafes and restaurants. The island was run by the Turkish Naval Forces until 1993, before being transferred to Istanbul University's department of Marine Life and Sea Products. In 2011, ownership of the island was first transferred to the Culture Ministry and then the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges (TOBB). Picture taken May 14, 2015. REUTERS/Murad Sezer
