A view of semi-detached homes in the Willesden neighbourhood of northwest London, August 15, 2014. The Bank of England gave a clean bill of health to Britain's controversial flagship mortgage guarantee scheme on Thursday, sparing the government from potential embarrassment in the run-up to a national election. The central bank also formally asked to expand its arsenal of powers to curb mortgage lending for homes and buy-to-let properties, and said it was bringing forward the date when it would put a figure on the maximum leverage banks can have. Brian Gardner (R) and Ben Cormack fit solar thermal water heaters onto the roof of a cottage on the island of Eigg, Inner Hebrides, Scotland May 28, 2014. The Scottish island of Eigg has the first completely wind, water and sun-powered electricity grid in the world, according to the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust. According to a local, between 85 and 95 percent of the energy consumed on the island comes from renewable resources. Scottish nationalists say that the best way to harness Scotland's renewable energy potential is to vote for independence on Sept 18, although an independent Scotland would also benefit from large oil reserves in the North Sea. Campaigners to keep Scotland in the United Kingdom argue that the growing renewables sector would suffer with independence, as the cost of new infrastructure would not be spread out across the whole of Britain. Men rest after salvaging metal on the 30th floor of the "Tower of David" skyscraper in Caracas February 3, 2014. It boasts a helicopter landing pad, glorious views of the Avila mountain range, and large balconies for weekend barbecues. Yet a 45-storey skyscraper in the center of Venezuela's capital Caracas is no five-star hotel or swanky apartment block: it is a slum, probably the highest in the world. Dubbed the "Tower of David", the building was intended to be a shining new financial center but was abandoned around 1994 after the death of its developer - banker and horse-breeder David Brillembourg - and the collapse of the financial sector. Squatters invaded the huge concrete skeleton in 2007, then-president Hugo Chavez's socialist government turned a blind eye, and now about 3,000 people call the tower their home. A crater is seen in Sanica, near Sanski Most
A crater is seen in Sanica, near Sanski Most January 17, 2014. The area was once a cottage with a small lake, a fish pond and some trees. In recent months, however, it has become a crater wider than 50 meters and deeper than 30 meters. The crater is growing and is threatening more households, with some residents saying they have been forced to leave their homes because walls have began to crack. This the second of such a phenomenon in the area and experts say the craters could be caused from a sudden sinking of soil due to the existence of air pockets in the soil. Local media said authorities will carry out an extensive research on the area next month. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic (BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA - Tags: ENVIRONMENT SOCIETY TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY)

A birds-eye view shows a recently completed neighbourhood bordering the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics Park in Sochi, October 10, 2013. The residents of Nekrasovka were resettled from Imeretinskaya Bay, a former Old Believer settlement that had to make way for the coastal cluster of the Olympic Park. Everything that remains of the historic home of the adherents of this purist Orthodox faction is a graveyard that is now sandwiched between Olympic venues. The Old Believers and other residents of Imeretinskaya received single detached houses, varying in size according to the amount of land they used to own. "We are of course very happy to live here," said Nekrasovka resident Lyubov Fursa, "but unfortunately these houses look pretty only from the outside. They were built with the cheapest materials. We had to do a lot of repairs, put a lot of money into them. Many of us had to go into debt to make a pay-up for the new house, after their old property was evaluated by the authorities. A home with solar panels on its roof is shown in a residential neighborhood in San Marcos, California September 19,2013. Well over 60 percent of solar systems in states like California and Arizona today are owned by a third party and financed, allowing homeowners to go solar by paying a monthly fee for panels instead of shouldering the $20,000 to $30,000 up front cost of a system.
