The Wider Image: Brazil tribal lands under new threat from farmers, miners
A decade after the Macuxi people won a bloody legal battle to expel rice planters from their reservation in a remote part of Brazil, their hold over ancestral lands has come under threat again from new right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro. The sprawling 1.7 million hectares (6,600 square miles) of savannah on the border with Venezuela Ñ a reservation called Raposa Serra do Sol Ñ is home to 25,000 native people whose main livelihood is raising cattle. But the land remains coveted by commercial farmers and mining prospectors, who believe the area is rich in minerals such as gold, diamonds, copper, molybdenum, bauxite and even niobium, a metal used to strengthen steel that Bolsonaro considers "strategic." An aerial view shows the Gahcho Kue diamond mine that De Beers is constructing in Northwest Territories in Canada September 25, 2015. A decline in diamond prices because of lower growth in Chinese jewelry demand is dulling the appeal of Canada's Arctic diamond industry, with the resulting drop in exploration hurting the region’s long-term prospects. Exploration spending in Canada's diamond-rich Northwest Territories (NWT), the world's third-biggest producer, is forecast to drop 54 percent this year, according to a Canadian government estimate earlier this year. Gemfields, the world's largest rough emerald producer, expects to take up to two more years to have stopped the losses at the Faberge jewellery business it bought two years ago, its chief executive, Ian Harebottle, said.
