A sign that reads, "The sea belongs to everyone. Do not get it dirty!. No Trash!", is seen on the shore of Quitapellejos beach in the Mediterranean Sea in the town of Palomares, as Spain has officially asked the U.S. to remove some soil from the area to help cleanup efforts after the town was the site of a 1966 nuclear accident in which a mid-air collision between two U.S. Air Force planes resulted in the release of radioactive plutonium-239 from undetonated hydrogen bombs over different areas in Palomares, near Almeria, southern Spain March 7, 2023. World War One bullets are seen from a British trench discovered during work to install new sewers in a street near Ypres, western Belgiuim, October 20, 2014. Centenary commemorations this year have spiked international interest particularly in the Ypres area, which saw some of the heaviest fighting and is now dotted with war cemeteries. Some 65 million soldiers mobilised for the Great War, around 9 million were killed, 20 million injured and nearly 7 million taken prisoner. Belgium will hold ceremonies on October 28 to mark the 100th anniversary of the First Battle of Ypres and the flooding of the Yser plain at Nieuwpoort - events that blocked the German advance and set up almost four years of trench warfare. A volunteer distributes pamphlets and free face masks amid the haze in Muar in Malaysia's southern state of Johor bordering Singapore, June 21, 2013. Military planes water-bombed Indonesian forest fires that worsened on Friday and blanketed neighboring Singapore in record levels of hazardous smog for a third straight day in one of Southeast Asia's worst air-pollution crises. As Singaporeans donned face masks and pulled children from playgrounds and Malaysia closed schools in the south, the deliberately-lit fires grew bigger in some areas. Whipped up by winds, the blazes added to fears over health problems and diplomatic tension in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, three of Southeast Asia's biggest economies. A cow covered in oil walks at an oil still at a ruptured oil well in South Sudan's Unity State, March 3, 2012. South Sudan accused Khartoum of bombing two oil wells in the north of the new nation and moving troops and weaponry close to an army base near the poorly defined border. A Sudanese official denied the allegations. Relations between Sudan and the South have deteriorated in recent months as talks about border disputes and oil transportation fees have floundered, causing the South to shut down oil production. Blood-stained shoes worn by Linda Lopez as she evacuated from the 97th Floor of Tower 2 on September 11, 2001 are seen in this photograph before becoming a part of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York August 22, 2011. Linda Lopez was at work at the Fiduciary Trust Company on the South Tower's 97th floor when the first plane crashed into North Tower, sending a fireball past their window and radiating a heat that she said felt like being sunburned. There was quickly a sense of confusion: Was it a bomb? Were the rumors that it was a plane crash true? Should people in the South Tower ignore the advice coming over the public address system to stay put and evacuate instead? Lopez felt she had to get out. She had reached only as far as the 61st when she was thrown against a wall as the second plane crashed into the floors above her. Taking off her shoes, she continued to head down the stairs, passing firefighters heading in the opposite direction. She ran barefoot out of the building, across broken glass and other debris. "Lady, your feet are bleeding," someone said to her as she paused a few blocks away in relative safety. She put her shoes back on, and began learning the details of what it was she had just escaped from. he museum, which occupies seven stories below the ground of the World Trade Center site--is still being built at the site of the fallen towers.
