Rebecca Zammit Lupi, a 14-year-old cancer patient, sits on her bed in her room at Rainbow Ward in Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre at Mater Dei Hospital, during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, in Tal-Qroqq, Malta, June 4, 2020. "Fighting cancer was already hard enough. Just to make things worse, we started getting COVID-19 in Malta. That week, I was just going into hospital to have chemo and little did we know... I wasn't getting out when I expected. They started lockdown. I couldn't even say bye to my dog and cats, and I couldn't even see my dad anymore. When they told us we couldn't even leave the room, or not even have the door open at first, my mum freaked out and I was sad but dealt with it somehow. One thing that was really different was the nurses. Before, I was able to go to the adolescent room, which they had just opened, and play Minecraft on the PlayStation with nurse Will Grima. Once lockdown started, any bit of fun I had was taken away." REUTERS/Darrin Zammit Lupi SEARCH "REBECCA LUPI" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Indonesian villages pit wild boars against dogs
A gory fight to the death between snarling dogs and captured wild boars. Gathered around a bamboo-walled arena, Indonesians in this remote part of Java island seem eager to watch the blood-curdling contests, known locally as 'adu bagong' (boar fighting). Not surprisingly, animal rights activist are up in arms against the regular spectacle, which began in the 1960s when wild pig numbers in this area in West Java soared and they were hunted to protect crops. Participants told Reuters the fights were a way to preserve a tradition of hunting in the area. There's also a cash prize for the winning dog. The fights take place in a 15-by-30 metre arena surrounded by a bamboo fence to protect spectators and only end when one of the animals is injured. If a boar survives a fight, once healed it will be returned to the arena to fight another day. If not, it will be butchered and sold for meat. Dog owners pay anywhere from 200,000 rupiah to 2 million rupiah ($15 to $150) to enter the fights, depending on the size of their dog. REUTERS/Beawiharta SEARCH "BOAR FIGHT" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: It's a dog's life
Petete is pictured at the Famproa dogs shelter in Los Teques, Venezuela August 16, 2016. Petete has spent over eight years in the shelter. "When the dog arrived, he had worms and sores on a leg. It was hard to heal and even when it did, his leg never fully functioned again. He is loving, but only until it is meal time, because then he fights with everyone and bites anyone who comes close," said Maria Silva who takes care of dogs at the shelter. A dog sits on the street next to a partially demolished house in the Vila Autodromo slum, with construction work for the Rio 2016 Olympic Park seen in the background in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 13, 2015. As sports arenas rise up around them and neighbours' houses are demolished, around 50 families remain in Vila Autodromo, a favela bordering the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro. About half of those refuse to leave the favela, which they describe as "paradise" because of a lack of violence compared with poor areas elsewhere in the city. With a year until the Games come to Brazil, over 90 percent of residents have already left after accepting compensation. The holdouts, despite violent run-ins with police, vow to fight eviction whatever the cost. Living in a ghost town with sporadic access to water and electricity, the families have become a symbol against the use of the Olympic Games to modernize Rio, a move critics say is only benefiting the rich. A dog stands near a building which was damaged by fighting in the town of Debaltseve February 25, 2015. Fighting over the railway hub of Debaltseve intensified in the days following a ceasefire deal meant to have taken effect on Feb. 15. Rebels who had encircled the town launched a massive assault, routing all Ukrainian forces by Feb. 18. The battle for the town caught civilians in the crossfire on a scale not yet seen in the war that has killed nearly 6,000 people. Most residential buildings in the town have been damaged by shelling or are burnt out. Picture taken February 25. Water will become scarcer in sprawling settlements such as Nuevo Pachacutec on the Pacific coast as the population of Peru's capital surges and global warming thaws Andean glaciers, reducing flows in coming decades as the ice disappears.
