An exercise band, a ball and a seed bag belonging to long COVID sufferer Jorge Martin, 44, the head of a higher-education association, are photographed through blue plastic, in Ansoain, northern Spain, March 17, 2021. The photograph was taken through blue plastic to visualise the effects of long COVID. Martin has been off work for more than a year due to long COVID. He developed double pneumonia when he got infected with coronavirus during the first wave of the disease. He has been battling with cognitive difficulties and a long list of physical problems ever since. "I would not have pictured myself at my age using rehabilitation tools, but I've welcomed them because they help me with my physical aches and provide me with some relief from the distress of looking at the calendar and realising that a year has gone by and I'm still not recovered," he said. Martin is worried about the toll the disease is taking on his job. "I forget the names of family members, even my own license plate. The other day, I was trying to write something down and I realised I was writing again what I had written two days before. My job is intellectual, what's going to happen if this gets worse?" The Wider Image: Displaced Puerto Ricans seek refuge in Florida
Across United States, state and local officials are scrambling to manage an influx of Puerto Ricans, a migration that is impacting education budgets, housing, demographics and voter rolls in communities where these newcomers are landing. Florida, already home to more than 1 million Puerto Ricans, is on the front lines. About 300,000 island residents have arrived in the state since early October, according to the Florida Division of Emergency Management. While some Puerto Ricans may eventually return home, many will not. The island is still reeling months after Hurricane Maria, a Category 5 storm, wreaked catastrophic damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. Nearly 40 percent of residents still lack electricity. The economy has been devastated.ÊFor Florida, the inflow of Puerto Ricans is altering public budgets and perhaps the political calculus in a state that President Donald Trump won by a slim margin in 2016. Puerto Ricans, who are U.S. citizens, are on pace to overtake Cuban-Americans within a few years as the state's largest Latino voting bloc. Many criticised the Trump administration's hurricane response as inadequate. Politicians are taking notice. Florida's Republican Governor Rick Scott has reached out to these newcomers. The state has opened reception centres where Puerto Ricans can apply for food stamps and Medicaid, the federal healthcare system for the poor. Scott has asked for an additional $100 million in state spending to house arriving families, many of whom are doubled up with relatives or packed into ageing hotels. A scrap dealer leans on a traffic signal and watches as protesters (not pictured) take part in a "March for dignity" to protest against austerity measures under the slogan "Pan, techo, trabajo y dignidad" (Bread, housing, job and dignity) in downtown Malaga, southern Spain, October 22, 2015. Spain's unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level in over four years and is now lower than when Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy took office, potentially boosting his chances in an election less than two months away. Frustration over an enduring jobs crisis will weigh on the Dec. 20 vote, with many Spaniards divided over whether their prospects are improving after a double-dip recession that sent unemployment soaring to nearly 27 percent in 2013. Silvina Batakis, Economy Minister of Buenos Aires' Province speaks in this handout photo taken on April 30, 2015 in La Plata. Argentina's ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli said on Thursday he would appoint his trusted economy minister in the province of Buenos Aires to take the same role on a national level if he wins the October 25 presidential election. The next government will inherit a sovereign debt default, an acute dollar shortage, double-digit inflation and a gaping fiscal deficit. Analysts said Scioli's comments would be viewed positively by financial markets. Batakis, largely unknown outside of Argentina, took the helm of Buenos Aires province economy ministry in December 2011 and last year turned its chronic fiscal deficit into surplus, partly via tax reform. Tang Weiguo (L), takes a nap on chairs at during a mid-day break at a brokerage house in Shanghai, China, June 16, 2015. Some are in it just for the money, others to help buy a meal. Then there are those who trade for fun or to spend time among friends. Millions of investors - pensioners, security guards, high-school students - dominate China's stock markets, conducting about 80 percent of all trades. Retirees gather in brokerage houses dotted around China also to enjoy some company and savour the air conditioning on hot days. Some start as young as 13, trading from home with an eye on future careers in finance. Winning isn't guaranteed. This year, among the most turbulent in China's financial history, its stock markets more than doubled in the six months to May, only to crash amid concerns that growth in the country, which makes everything from cars to steel, is slowing faster than previously thought. Brought to its knees when its property market bubble burst four years ago, Vietnam is riding into another boom, with construction starting in Ho Chi Minh City on two of the world's tallest skyscrapers and buyers snapping up new projects fast. The speed of the market's turnaround has been startling. Successful property transactions have doubled from a year ago, and developers have halved their unsold inventory from $6 billion at the peak of the crisis at the start of 2013. Japanese award-winning architect Tadao Ando takes his seat at a news conference in Tokyo, July 16, 2015. The architect who oversaw the selection of plans for Japan's new Olympic stadium defended the controversial design on Thursday, saying ballooning costs were not his fault even as the government appeared poised to consider cost-cutting changes. Last month's announcement that costs for the new National Stadium had surged to $2.1 billion, nearly double original estimates, set off a firestorm among the public, skeptical about spending so much when the country is still recovering from the 2011 disasters that left nearly 20,000 dead.
