The Wider Image: Beauty, money and feathers
As night-time approaches in Sanliurfa, southeastern Turkey, most of the alleyways of the city's old bazaar are emptying out of buyers and vendors, except for one. The bustle of daytime trading has died down, but on this little street, a stream of men carry cardboard boxes filled with pigeons to a cluster of three teahouses. Here, they sell the birds at Sanliurfa's famed auctions to a dedicated band of pigeon keepers and breeders, a pastime that has been thriving for hundreds of years across the region and over the nearby border into war-torn Syria. In a country where the minimum wage is about 1,400 Liras ($367) a month, enthusiasts regularly easily spend hundreds of dollars for one bird. "I once sold a pair of pigeons forÊ35,000 Turkish Lira," says auctioneer Imam Dildas. "This is a passion, a hobby you cannot quit. I've been known to sell the fridge and my wife's gold bracelets to pay for pigeons." REUTERS/Umit Bektas SEARCH "PIGEONS AUCTION" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. A flock of ducklings scramble in their shelter at a poultry farm in Doazit, Southwestern France, December 17, 2015. The outbreak is affecting France's main foie gras producing region just before demand peaks over the year-end holiday season, although the authorities have stressed there is no evidence that bird flu can be transmitted to humans via food. The down, which is put into outerwear made by Canada Goose, is seen on the manufacturing floor of the company's facility in Toronto January 17, 2012. Coat maker Canada Goose found its niche by shunning the make-it-offshore phenomenon, producing its heavy duty down parkas on Canadian soil. Even as Canada's clothing industry crumbles, with employment down 60 percent in just over a decade, the 55-year old family-run shop bucked the broader trend of moving production to low-cost locales by keeping manufacturing at home. Details from cygnet is seen on hands of The Queen's Swan Marker during the Swan Upping ceremony on the River Thames in southern England. Feathers from a a cygnet is seen down on the hands of David Barber, The Queen's Swan Marker, during the annual Swan Upping ceremony, during which young cygnets are counted and assessed for signs of injury or disease, on the River Thames near Windsor in Berkshire, southern England, July 18, 2005. The five-day census of the swan population dates back to the twelfth century when the Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans. Today, the Crown retains the right to ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water, but The Queen only exercises her ownership on certain stretches of the River Thames and its surrounding tributaries. A CHILD PLAYS WITH PIGEONS IN VENICE'S ST MARK'S SQUARE.
TO GO WITH STORY ITALY-VENICE - UNDATED FILE PHOTO - A child plays with pigeons in Venice's famous St Mark's Square. The talk of the town in Venice these days is not of high technology to stop flooding. Nor is it about a splendid exhibition on the Mayans. It is about something much more pedestrian, pigeons and their droppings. Venice's mayor Massino Cacciari has ruffled the feathers of animal rights activists by ruling that many of the famed birds that carpet areas such as St. Mark's Square will have to be put down because they carry disease.

Italian designer Chiara Boni (C) acknowledges the applause with two models at the end of her show at Milan's Spring/Summer '99 collection October 3. Long and sexy was the statement at Chiara Boni's collection, but the Florentine designer looked to the 1930s to set the mood. Models wore feathered hats or carried fluffy boas as they moved down the catwalk in long, sequined dresses.
