The Wider Image: Haiti's brides beat hurricanes, power cuts and protests to wed in style
Musician Duckyns St-Eloi, who is known as 'Zikiki' sings to his bride Mirla-Samuelle Pierre as she enters the church with her father Pierre Obas on their wedding day at Eglise de l'Universite Adventiste d'Haiti, a church in Diquini, Carrefour, Haiti, December 28, 2017. Pierre and Zikiki wed in church, mainly to please Pierre's parents. But the theme of the wedding decoration was 'rastafari,' reflecting the culture of the dreadlocked groom. Like all but the wealthiest Haitians, they chose not to spend any money on a grand reception or honeymoon. "Instead, that same evening we went out to a nightclub," said Zikiki, "and we had a lot of fun together." REUTERS/Valerie Baeriswyl SEARCH "HAITIAN WEDDINGS BAERISWYL" FOR THIS STORY. METZOKE DRAGOT, Palestinian Territories
The Wider Image: Vanishing Dead Sea - a hermit haven
A naked man covered in mud lies on a beach, nearby a dreadlocked recluse reads from the Book of Exodus and a woman strikes a low soothing note from a Tibetan singing bowl. It's sunset at the Dead Sea, where the New Age melds with a biblical vista in danger of becoming a paradise lost. The Dead Sea's salt-rich waters are vanishing and its shores are being devoured by sinkholes, making Metzoke Dragot beach one of the last unspoiled spots at the lowest point on the planet. Over centuries the ancient lake has drawn monks, hermits, small Jewish sects and early Christians, travellers seeking spiritual elation and tourists who enjoy floating in the highly-buoyant water and covering themselves with its mineral-rich mud. But in the past few decades, ecological damage has been devastating. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun SEARCH "ZVULUN DEADSEA" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY.
