A man searches for food in a garbage container along a street, with the Four Towers business district pictured in the background, in Tetuan, Madrid, January 28, 2014. Last year, families and activists from the 15M indignant movement founded a food bank in Tetuan, a working-class neighbourhood of Madrid. It does not simply hand out donations; instead, the families who become recipients are expected to collaborate with the food bank by helping to collect and distribute food. Every week they stand outside local supermarkets picking up donations. Afterwards, they have to do an inventory of the food and allocate portions to each family, theirs included, which they distribute every two weeks. Currently more than 30 families (over a hundred people) are involved in the project. The development of social movements like the Tetuan food bank have come under the spotlight in Spain, whose economy has been in and out of recession since a property bubble burst six years ago, sending unemployment soaring to record highs. Spaniard Jose Rodriguez, 41, an unemployed construction worker who has been jobless since 2011, pushes a trolley he uses to collect scrap metal and other recyclable items from rubbish bins in Palma de Mallorca, one of Spain's major tourist islands, January 8, 2013. Metals such as copper, iron, aluminium, and brass and any others found in trash is collected daily by a growing number of jobless seeking cash by selling it to the junkyard. One in four Spaniards are out of work and Spain's economy is contracting under the weight of 60 billion euros ($79 billion) worth of budget cuts, and expected to dip 1.5 percent this year - likely leaving even more people out of work. A woman walks past a man collecting garbage in a working class area of Freetown, Sierra Leone, November 19, 2012. With its galloping growth rate of an estimated 21 percent this year, driven by new iron ore projects and recent oil discoveries, Sierra Leone is being grouped by economists with the bounding "African lions" - countries from the continent that are leading the pack of the fastest growing in the world. But Sierra Leone's business prospects may look considerably sleeker from a Johannesburg office or boutique hotel than from the pot-holed streets of Freetown, where things like available cash, power, transport and the Internet are services only obtained with difficulty, by those who can afford to get them. Street cleaners from the Akhdam community collect garbage in Yemen's southwestern city of Taiz
Street cleaners from the Akhdam community collect garbage in Yemen's southwestern city of Taiz October 10, 2012. Yemeni Akhdam, or servants, are similar to hereditary castes, but are distinguished by their African features and the menial jobs they perform. Widespread prejudice places the Akhdam at the bottom of Yemen's social ladder. Asked about the origins of the Akhdam, Yemenis say they are descendants of Ethiopians who crossed the Red Sea to conquer Yemen before the arrival of Islam some 1,400 years ago - making them outsiders in their own country. Most live in slum areas in the outskirts of the capital Sanaa and other main cities. They reside in small huts haphazardly built of wood and cloth, without basic services such as running water, electricity and sewage networks. Picture taken October 10, 2012.
