KIU, Kenya
The Wider Image: Some Kenyans say Chinese-built railway leaves them in the dust
The soporific buzz of bees fills the abandoned train station at Kiu, a two-hour drive from Kenya's capital Nairobi. Rusting rail sleepers lay on the grass outside; a slender snake slithers away after footsteps disturb his sunbaked snooze. A new Chinese-built rail track lies about 500 metres away from the old colonial-era railway station, which closed down in 2012. But the new high-speed trains thunder through without stopping; Kiu is just a dusty blur glimpsed through the window. Residents of this eastern Kenya town serving 6,000 people, feel bereft without their station and the old railway line, which they depended on to get to work, or the nearest hospitals. Travelling by road is a slow and costly alternative. Opened in 2017, the new $3.3 billion railway is part of China's "One Belt, One Road" initiative, a multi-trillion dollar series of infrastructure projects upgrading land and maritime trade routes between China and Europe, Asia and Africa. The new railway sliced travel times in half for passengers and cargo travelling between the capital Nairobi and the port city of Mombasa. The non-express service takes just over four hours to make six stops but only runs once a day, a steep reduction from the 46 stops of the old service that ran twice a day. Award Winner: From a dusty town to a flowing river: how Reuters photographers won a Pulitzer
From the dusty town in Honduras where thousands are fleeing violence to the currents of the Rio Grande, Reuters photographers walked, waded and flew to capture images of thousands of Central American migrants seeking asylum in the United States. The effort to document the human hardship and its political consequences was honored with a 2019 Pulitzer Prize on Monday, winning the breaking news photography award for "a vivid and startling visual narrative of the urgency, desperation and sadness of migrants as they journeyed to the U.S. from Central and South America," the Pulitzer board said. The entry included 20 pictures from 11 photographers, part of a larger team of people from 14 countries that were assigned to cover the story, some of them joining migrants for daylong journeys on foot. Colleagues were flown in from around the world to reinforce the U.S.- and Latin American-based team of photographers, drivers and fixers, many of them spending weeks or months on the road. The Wider Image: In Peru, a soccer field unites shantytown community
Nueva Union doesn't have running water, a connection to the electrical grid or paved roads. But the neighbourhood has something that makes life in a Peruvian shantytown more bearable: a soccer field. Nueva Union residents, mostly migrants from poor Peruvian provinces, carved a flat clearing for playing soccer into the dusty hillside when they settled in Lima some 15 years ago. The grassless soccer field - like scores of similar makeshift pitches across the country - is a testament to Peru's love for the game as its team prepares to play in the World Cup for the first time since 1982. World Cup fever has injected fresh enthusiasm into the games played on the pitch in Nueva Union, which overlooks the capital of some 10 million people. Like the Peruvian team, Nueva Union is an underdog - home to hard-working families struggling to build a better future for themselves with scant help from authorities. A goal is scored as Palestinians play football at a tent city protest where Palestinians demand the right to return to their homeland, near the Israel-Gaza border in the southern Gaza Strip, April 26, 2018. The eyes of the world will turn to Russia this week for the four-yearly gathering of soccer's superstars but it is away from the glitzy new stadiums built at a staggering cost you must look to find the sport's beating heart; to the dusty streets and poverty-wracked neighbourhoods where the simple act of scoring a goal can still transcend the grind of everyday life.
