Judge Robert Paul Kaye sits at the bench after a Florida jury ruled July 7 that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer and other diseases and that U.S. cigarette makers hid the dangers of their product from the public. The verdict, read in Miami-Dade County Court, also found that cigarette smoking is addictive and that the United States biggest tobacco companies must pay unspecified damages.
