The Wider Image: Along the U.S. - Mexico border fence
Building a wall along the U.S.- Mexico border has been a contentious subject in this year's U.S. presidential election. In parts of California and Arizona, a wall already exists. It runs across rocky deserts, flowing sand dunes and miles of agricultural land. The wall splits towns and families, marking a boundary between two countries that used to be one. Busy land ports of entry and signs written in both Spanish and English attest to an interdependence that still exists in the bifurcated cities, faded mining towns and eccentric art outposts that punctuate the arid landscape. The border between Mexico and the United States spans some 2,000 miles between San Diego, California and Brownsville, Texas. REUTERS/Mike Blake SEARCH "U.S.-MEXICO FENCE" FOR THIS STORY. Guatemala's President-elect Jimmy Morales attends a interview with Reuters, Guatemala City, October 26, 2015. Morales, a former TV comedian who has never held office, swept to power in Guatemala's presidential election on Sunday after milking public anger over a corruption scandal that deepened distrust of the country's political establishment. The 46-year-old Morales overwhelmingly beat center-left rival and former first lady Sandra Torres in a run-off vote despite his lack of government experience and some policy ideas that strike many as eccentric. Guatemala's President-elect Jimmy Morales addresses the crowd of supporters after winning the presidential election in Guatemala City, October 26, 2015. Australian Politician Clive Palmer is pictured during a dinner hosted for Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Parliament House in Canberra, July 8, 2014. It took mining magnate Clive Palmer only three days to show Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott just how uncomfortable life can be in a parliament in which he holds the balance of power.
The neophyte Palmer United Party (PUP), set up by the eccentric billionaire little more than a year ago, on July 10 blocked the repeal of Australia's controversial carbon tax just hours after Abbott publicly said it would pass that day. REUTERS/Jason Reed (AUSTRALIA - Tags: POLITICS BUSINESS)
