Quintana, then 18 years old, suffered burns over 65 percent of her body at the hands of a Chilean army patrol on July 2, 1986 in one of the worst incidents of violence during the dictatorship of Chilean General Augusto Pinochet. Rodrigo Rojas Denegri, a 19-year-old photographer and son of a Chilean exile, was killed in the same incident. They were arrested during protests against the military regime in a neighborhood of Santiago by an army patrol, searched, beaten, held within proximity of inflammable material, sprinkled with fuel, set on fire, and taken to a place on the outskirts of the city where they were unable to receive medical care, and there they were abandoned.
