VICE MARSHAL KUO KUANG-YUEH OF TAIWAN AIR FORCE STEPS OUT OF THE F-104.
Vice Marshal Kuo Kuang-yueh of the Taiwan air force steps out of the F-104 Starfighter jet, which was formally decommissioned in an air force ceremony in Taichung, central Taiwan May 22. Taiwan military decommissioned all its F-104s, which had served the air force for close to four decades and were once the backbone of Taiwan air force. In 1967, the figher set a record of shooting down for the first time two Communist Chinese Mig-19s over Taiwan's air space. Taiwan has in recent years gradually replaced all its 200 F-104s with latest warplanes, including F-16s from the United States and Mirage 2000s from France. Taiwan also produced its own fighters - Indegenous Defence Fighter - modelled after U.S. F-20 Tigersharks.
