A supporter of Portuguese president Jorge Sampaio waves a scarf after the announcement of the elections results in Lisbon January 14, 2001. Sampaio strolled to re-election for a second five-year term as head of state, maintaining the ruling Socialist Party's firm grip on power. The final count late on Sunday gave the affable 61-year-old lawyer 55.8 percent of the vote, well ahead of the 34.5 percent won by conservative rival, Joaquim Ferreira do Amaral.
