The Wider Image: Hazmat suits and holy water: two priests bring faith to Philippines lockdown
Catholic priest Eduardo "Ponpon" Vasquez has worn a hazmat suit more than a vestment this past month. His parish in the populous Caloocan area of the Philippine capital Manila has been eerily quiet in the six weeks since the government put half of the country's population on a strict lockdown to try to curb coronavirus infections. Public gatherings, schools, transport services, and non-essential work has been halted, including that of the church. Priests in the predominantly Catholic nation have had to be creative in finding ways to keep the faithful engaged. Most have resorted to streaming online masses while others have set up pews outside churches. Some have printed pictures of parishioners and displayed them inside their closed chapels. But for Vasquez, the physical presence of the church is more important now than ever. These days, he wears his stole and oblate cross over a blue hazmat suit with a bottle of Holy Water in one hand and an alcohol spray in the other as he enters some of the poorest areas of his community to bring relief, both literal and spiritual. "The situation of many Filipinos these days is pitiful. Lockdown is not the same for everyone," said Vasquez. REUTERS/Eloisa Lopez SEARCH "CORONAVIRUS PRIESTS" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Alexandria yearns for lost elegance
The Zogheb palace, which was originally owned by a Syrian-Italian family and built in 1877, and is one of the oldest buildings on Fouad street, is pictured in Alexandria, Egypt February 22, 2016. The building has also been used as a court and a school, but is currently unoccupied. In Egypt's Alexandria, Fouad Street reflects the city's rich history and is known for its elegant villas and antique shops. Today the Mediterranean coastal city, once a melting pot of nationalities and faith groups, is overcrowded and dilapidated, like many of Egypt's urban centres. Fouad, among the city's oldest streets and once home to a Greek poet and a British novelist, today features modern retail brands and is an area still popular with antique fans and art lovers. Spotlight: Boxing for girls in Karachi
Students of a madrasa (religious school) gather to a watch girls' bout during the Sindh Junior Sports Association Boxing Tournament in Karachi, Pakistan February 21, 2016. For the past six months about a dozen girls, aged 8 to 17, have gone to the Pak Shaheen Boxing Club after school to practice their jabs, hooks and upper cuts. Pakistani women have been training as boxers in small numbers and competed in the South Asian Games last year, said Younis Qambrani, the coach who founded the club in 1992 in the Karachi neighbourhood of Lyari, better known for internecine gang warfare than for breaking glass ceilings. A Shi'ite woman is seen going into a classroom at a local Islamic school in Zaria, Kaduna state, Nigeria, February 2, 2016. Sectarian tensions are rising in Nigeria's Muslim north, where hundreds of Shi'ites were killed in clashes with the army in the town of Zaria in December, according to Shi'ites and rights groups. Following the clashes, bulldozers sent by the state levelled Shi'ite shrines, a cemetery and offices in the deeply divided town. The region is already grappling with an insurgency waged by the jihadist Boko Haram group.
