Veterans and relatives of the 1982 Falklands War pay tribute to the Argentine servicemen who died in the South Atlantic conflict between Britain and Argentina on the 33rd anniversary of the war over the island chain in Rosario April 2, 2015. Britain should spend more helping its own poor than on defending the Falkland Islands, President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner said on Thursday, responding to a recently-announced budget increase aimed at protecting the contested archipelago. Britain's government said last week it would reinforce its military presence on the Falklands to counter the "very live threat" posed by Argentina. Fernandez, in a speech honouring soldiers who died in her country's failed 1982 invasion of the South Atlantic islands, dismissed the idea of Argentina being a threat, telling Britain to focus instead on fighting poverty within its own borders. Margaret Thatcher, the "Iron Lady" who transformed Britain and inspired conservatives around the world by radically rolling back the state during her 11 years in power, died on Monday following a stroke. She was 87. Britain held its breath in 1982 when Thatcher dispatched a naval task force to the Falkland islands, which had been seized by Argentine invaders. A man sits near crosses honouring Argentina's soldiers who were killed in the 1982 Falkland Islands war, commonly known in Argentina as the "Malvinas", at the Plazo de Mayo square in Buenos Aires April 8, 2013. Despite losing several warships, the British eventually reclaimed the south Atlantic islands 74 days later. REUTERS/Enrique Marcarian (ARGENTINA - Tags: SOCIETY POLITICS CONFLICT OBITUARY)
