The Wider Image: Temptation everywhere: Mexican children struggle with obesity
Food that contains approximately 5,200 calories that Pricila, 18, used to consume in one day before taking part in a weight loss program, is displayed for a photograph at her family home in Acolman, Mexico, January 12, 2021. Pricila had a gastric sleeve surgery, during which a part of the stomach is removed, for weight loss at 16. Realization hit her when aged 15 she weighed 113 kilos, equal to her father. Pricila, who has a metabolic disease, said even with exercise and a nutrition plan her weight loss had stalled, making her a candidate for the surgery. "When I tried to lose weight, there was temptation everywhere," she said. Pricila now weighs 83 kilos. "It was a real feat, especially because I was so used to eating junk food, sweets, all the time." REUTERS/Carlos Jasso SEARCH "JASSO OBESITY" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. The Wider Image: Scarred by 2020, Gen Z looks to a COVID-free future
Joao Vitor Cavalcante, 19, a mechanics student and a keen cyclist, poses for a photograph at the building where he lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil, December 19, 2020. Cavalcante had trained hard throughout 2019 for his budding career as a professional cyclist. He thought 2020 would be his best year so far. But the pandemic upended that dream, prompting him to take a job at a car repair shop and give up his plans for a career in cycling. "Cycling is not easy, it is cruel, although I enjoyed that cruelty," Cavalcante said. "Now I don't want to live off of that anymore. Instead I want to live to do it." Cavalcante is one of millions of Brazilian Gen Zs who have had to drastically adjust their aspirations due to the pandemic's effect on the economy. Cavalcante's parents were forced to shut down the family clothing store during the first few months of the pandemic and his sponsor left him when cycling competitions were cancelled. His uncle, aware of the economic constraints, asked him to work at his car repair shop. "He was my salvation," Cavalcante said. "Either I took that job or I would be working for nothing. Last year, I sort of had a future (in cycling), but that time has passed." Cavalcante now works eight hours a day repairing cars, although he says he dislikes washing dirty auto parts. But it is a job that helped support his family during a rough time. He wants to compete again in 2021, but only as an amateur. "For 2021, I hope that things return to normal and that people can see their friends and family again and that they value their affection," he said. De Castro from Madrid, Spain, has been dressing up as a scuba-diving Father Christmas at aquariums in several countires for the past 20 years. Unable to travel back to Spain to spend Christmas Day with his extended family because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, he plans to get together with his family via the internet over dinner. It will be very different Christmas from the norm - he's disappointed not to be able to meet his family and friends in person, but prefers not to take any risks - "I'm staying away and hope to have a proper Christmas a few months down the line." His Christmas message is clear: "Stay safe, keep all measures in place and this will be over soon. Next year will be better. Don't rush this Christmas or you won't have any more Christmases after that." REUTERS/Darrin Zammit Lupi SEARCH "GLOBAL SANTA" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES

Connie John takes her son Calais Chee, 5, who are both from Navajo Nation, to look for pinons, (also known as 'pinyons'), near Cameron, Arizona, U.S. September 15, 2020. Pinons are seeds from a pine cone and are considered a delicacy and a traditional food for the Navajo. "When you go pinyon picking, you get to share stories and have family time. Family time is the best time. When you get out into nature you can forget about things for a while. You don't get quality time that much today, so many people are on their phones or planning to go places," said John. REUTERS/Stephanie Keith SEARCH "NAVAJO KEITH" FOR THIS STORY.
