Among the young sumo wrestlers lifting weights in the ring, 10-year-old Kyuta Kumagai stands out. At 85 kilograms (187 lb), Kyuta is twice the size of the other children his age and is so dominant that he wrestles, and beats, boys five or six years older. Last year, he was crowned the under-10 world champion, beating out competition from as far afield as the United Kingdom and Ukraine. His training regime, devised by his father Taisuke, is relentless. He trains six days a week, either at his local sumo club or lifting weights. He also swims and practices track and field to build up the flexibility and explosive quickness needed for sumo wrestling. Kyuta has been on the programme since his father entered him in a tournament while still in kindergarten. "I didn't teach him anything, he could do various things naturally," said Taisuke, a former amateur sumo. "There is a talent for sumo and he has that talent. He won the tournament. I thought he may have something special." A shy boy of few words, Kyuta's motivations are simple. "It is fun to beat people older than me." The Wider Image: New mothers suffer nerves, guilt as maternity leave ends
Natalia Bulgakova, 31, a lawyer at a consulting company, her husband Anatoly, an economic analyst, and their seven-month-old son Gleb pose for a portrait in their apartment in Moscow, Russia, February 17, 2019. Natalia has been on maternity leave for nine months and is going back to work in second half of March. "It's pleasant that you'll go back to doing what you were doing before the maternity leave, going back to the previous rhythm of life. But at the end of the day, of course, the child gives you far more positive emotions. Of course, I would like to somehow balance that lifestyle and this one, so as to give equally to the child. At the same time, going out to work still means that I will be gone for most of the day and would be able to spend time with the kid only in the evening and on weekends." Statutory maternity leave in Russia can be as long as three years. It can be claimed by any relative - a mother, father, grandmother, grandfather or child's guardian. Recipients receive their average monthly income for a period of 140 days - 70 days before and 70 after giving birth - but this sum is capped at a maximum total of 301,000 roubles. The maternity leave is paid by the employer, which is then reimbursed by the state. After this initial period, recipients are paid 40% of their average monthly income for up to 1.5 years, but no more than 26,152 roubles a month. Pay is not guaranteed for the period between 1.5 and three years. During the whole period of maternity leave, employer is obliged to guarantee the working position to the mother or the carer. Pictures of the Year: A picture and its story
U.S. President Donald Trump welcomes 11-year-old Frank Giaccio as he cuts the Rose Garden grass at the White House in Washington, U.S., September 15, 2017. Carlos Barria: "Working in Washington, covering politics, I struggle with the rigid and tightly controlled images we're asked to take. But once in a while I get to witness a natural, unscripted moment. One morning, we were told the White House Pool would gather by the door of the Rose Garden for a photo opportunity. It was unscheduled so I didn't know what to expect. As it happened, the President was planning to surprise 11-year-old Frank Giaccio, who had written a letter to Trump offering to mow the White House lawn. Giaccio had been invited to work for a day at the White House alongside National Park Service staff. As we waited for Trump, I saw that Giaccio was very focused on this job and not paying much attention to the group of journalists, photographers and cameramen milling around the garden. Suddenly, from the other side of a hedge, wearing his signature, long red tie, President Trump appeared, dropping in as if this were an episode of The Apprentice. He walked towards Giaccio to say hi and pose for a picture. He began shouting to the boy above the noise of the lawnmower, but it was too loud. Giaccio was so focused on his job that he didn't notice Trump. He walked right past, pushing the machine. Trump paused for a second and walked to the end of the lawn to talk to Giaccio, but again, he didn't stop mowing. He kept going until his father rushed onto the scene to grab his attention, and he finally stopped to greet Trump. The image of Trump shouting at a kid who is mowing his lawn might have many interpretations in today's politically polarized United States. But for me it was just a kid who loved what he was doing, to the point he almost appeared to ignore the President." REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File photo SEARCH "POY STORY" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Drawing in the customers in Mogadishu
A collection of yawing mouths and extracted teeth, booming stereo speakers and colourful hookah pipes adorn shop fronts in Somalia, a colourful contrast to the airbrushed artworks of big business. Somalian mural artist Muawiye Hussein Sidow, also known as 'Shik Shik', is the man responsible for the art that features on more than 100 shops, including barbers, tea shops and supermarkets across Mogadishu. Sidow's father was a commercial artist, who passed his knowledge and skills on to his son. Sidow, 31, took on his father's business in 1998 and his painting supports not only his own family, but helps sustain his dad as well as many others. "I make the pictures to get daily food for my wife and three kids," he said. REUTERS/Feisal Omar SEARCH "OMAR SHOPS" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY.
