Amir and his wife Hina were supposed to be at the mosque with Faisal that day. They said, bullets whizzed through their car as the gunman fired a volley of shots, but they managed to escape unharmed as Amir used his hand to press on the accelerator of the car to get away into cover. Faisal, who was minutes late for Friday prayers, managed to hide in the Al Noor mosque's toilet and phoned for help. Although he survived unharmed, Faisal speaks of recurring dreams of the attack like a video game, in which most scenarios ended up with him being dead. Faisal now puts every effort in helping the families of victims by cooking and delivering food and running errands for them. REUTERS/Edgar Su SEARCH "SHOOTING SURVIVORS" FOR THIS STORY. Pictures of the Year: A picture and its story
Caleb Amisi Luyai an opposition politician of the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition, reacts after a gas canister fired by policemen hits his car during a protest along a street in Nairobi, Kenya, October 13, 2017. Baz Ratner: "I was lucky to get this picture. I was covering an opposition protest with Thomas Mukoya, the chief photographer for East Africa. I was riding a motorbike ahead of a convoy going to Nairobi's main street in defiance of a government ban on rallies in city centres. Suddenly, I heard the crack of teargas being fired by riot police. The police were stationed at almost every intersection to block the protesters. I pulled over to put on my gas mask and saw that one of the canisters had landed inside a nearby car. A man was leaning out the window choking on fumes and frantically trying to get out. The gas was so thick he couldn't see anything. As I ran to help open the door I managed to take a few photos. I didn't recognise the man but Thomas Mukoya later identified him as an opposition MP Caleb Amisi Luyai. Opposition protests were almost a daily occurrence during Kenya's long election season and police often disperse them with teargas or live rounds. Sometimes civilians were caught. Two days before I took the photos of the MP I saw a teargas canister land in a crowded bus. A woman was so desperate to escape she climbed out of the vehicle's back window." A member of the riot security forces points a gun through the fence of an air force base at David Jose Vallenilla, who was fatally injured during clashes at a rally against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government in Caracas, Venezuela, June 22, 2017. Carlos Garcia Rawlins: "Once again, protesters clashed with security forces in front of an air base during an opposition rally in Caracas. In a matter of seconds, a demonstrator standing in a gap in the fence of the base, jumped down as a group of military men carrying long firearms approached from inside. Vallenilla, who was crouched down on the highway covered by the fence, stood up at just a few feet from the soldier, who began shooting. He fell to the ground, and immediately got to his feet to escape, as another activist wrapped in the Venezuelan flag and carrying a flimsy wooden shield, tried to give him cover and also came under fire. Fellow protesters gathered round Vallenilla to drag him away, so I rushed in and by then he looked very badly injured. Vallenilla died later in hospital." Momtaz fled to Bangladesh where she spent 20 days at the MSF clinic receiving treatment for burns to her face and body. "What can I say about the future, if now we have no food, no house, no family. A Picture and Its Story: Venezuela: death of a protester
Over months of protests Carlos Garcia Rawlins has been on Venezuela's streets daily, documenting increasingly violent clashes with security forces, experience that helped put him within eyeshot of a soldier who fatally wounded a young activist at close range. David Jose Vallenilla, 22, was crouched down on the highway by a fence. At this moment he stood up, protected only by a small rucksack strapped to his chest, and just a few feet from the soldier, who began shooting. Garcia captured the moment in a series of photos, as Vallenilla falls to the ground, then gets to his feet to escape, as another activist wrapped in the Venezuelan flag and carrying a flimsy wooden shield tries to give him cover and also comes under fire. Garcia rushed in as protesters gathered round Vallenilla to drag him away, and captured another stark image, of the young man's face as paramedics drove him away on a motorbike. "By then he looked very bad, badly injured," he said. Vallenilla died in hospital a few minutes later. At least 75 people have been killed since the protests began in April.
