A rolled-up carpet is left in front of a fireplace, inside a room that was once used as the grand hall for receiving guests at Villa Guardamangia, a former residence of Britain's Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, in Pieta, Malta, June 23, 2020. The then-Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were in the first years of their marriage at the time and moved to Malta when Prince Philip was based there in command of a Royal Navy frigate. The Maltese government agency Heritage Malta acquired the Villa Guardamangia for some five million euros and hopes not just to restore the villa to the way it looked several decades ago, but also to turn it into a museum of Malta's history as a British colony until independence in 1964, and the links with the British royal family. Luis Guerrero, 44, warms himself by a chimney fire after lighting it in his home on a cold winter's day in Ronda, near Malaga, southern Spain December 19, 2013. Spanish electricity bills are set to rise by at least 10.5 percent in January, hitting cash-strapped consumers hard and casting more doubt on whether a wide-ranging energy reform passed in July will be enough to fix a distorted power market.
Spain is trying to balance a 30 billion euro ($41 billion) electricity tariff deficit created by years of a policy that kept prices below the sum of costs ranging from generation and transmission to renewable subsidies and capacity payments.
The reforms, which include subsidy cuts and tax hikes, were meant to spread the burden of curbing the tariff deficit among consumers, companies and the state, which had pledged 3.6 billion euros in funds to help close the gap. REUTERS/Jon Nazca (SPAIN - Tags: SOCIETY POLITICS ENERGY BUSINESS)

A view of the fireplace and living room in a multi-million dollar home that was the spec renovation project of lender Jan Brzeski and developer Scott Ryan is seen in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles, California August 5, 2013. Brzeski is a private money lender running an investment firm in Los Angeles that provides loans to house flippers, investors who buy a home, refurbish it, and sell it on at a profit. Many flippers go to money lenders because they can't get banks to provide such short-term, quick financing. Eighteen months ago Brzeski and his firm, Arixa Capital Advisors, were lending investor money to flippers on very different properties: $250,000 single family homes in southern California's up-and-coming low to middle class blue-collar neighborhoods. Most of the deals involved foreclosed homes that were totally refurbished, and then sold quickly. Brzeski now focuses on developers working on high-end flips of mansions and townhouses in exclusive neighborhoods, such as the Hollywood Hills and Bel Air. There has been a surge in high-end and luxury flipping nationwide. Between 2011 and today, flips of homes valued at $1 million or more have risen almost 40 percent across the United States, according to RealtyTrac, the housing data company. A cloud of smoke looms over Athens with the Olympic stadium (R) as seen from northern suburbs January 3, 2013. Fireplaces and wood burning stoves are making a comeback among cash-strapped Greeks horrified by the soaring costs of central heating as winter begins. Picture taken January 3, 2013. A part of a harness for the Vatican Swiss guard lies in a fireplace at a workshop in Molln, Upper Austria June 12, 2012. Blacksmith brothers Johann, 29, and Georg, 28, produce made-to-order handmade harnesses for the Vatican Swiss Guard, which take 120 hours of handiwork per piece and hardly differs from the 500-year-old originals. The brothers carry on the tradition of the blacksmith trade in the fifth generation of their family. REUTERS/Lisi Niesner (AUSTRIA - Tags: SOCIETY MILITARY)

Agronomist Marcelo Colombo prepares a barbecue in a fireplace at his ranch near the town of Valdes, southwest of Buenos Aires May 26, 2012. The possibility of an increase in the land tax imposed on farmers of the Buenos Aires and Entre Rios provinces, two of Argentina's main agricultural regions, may increase the tension between the country's main farmers organizations and the government of President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. The president of the Rural Society of Argentina, Hugo Biolcati, said that if the tax hike is approved, strikes could increase to reach crisis level. Picture taken May 26, 2012. A cat sits near a furnace in a house owned by Oleksandr Berezenets, 30, and his wife Nataliya in the village of Visshya Dubechnya, some 30 km (19 miles) north of Kiev, February 2, 2012. Temperature in the village is about -1 degree Celsius (30.2 degrees Fahrenheit) indoors and -27 degrees Celsius (- 16.6 degrees Fahrenheit) outdoors. Record-low temperatures in parts of Eastern Europe pushed the death toll from Arctic conditions to at least 89 people on Wednesday, and have forced Russian gas provider Gazprom to warn over supplies to Europe. In Ukraine, 43 people have died in the past five days, its emergency ministry said, as the former Soviet republic shivered through its coldest winter in six years. A melted antique gas pump sits at a burnt-out home south of Reno, Nevada January 20, 2012. The careless disposal of hot fireplace ashes by an elderly man ignited the fierce brush fire that destroyed 26 houses, prompted thousands of people to flee their homes and closed a major highway near northern Nevada's largest city, officials said on Friday.
