British beach resorts, which flourished in the 19th century and earlier, have tempted tourists for years with amusement arcades, fairground rides and cheap and cheerful souvenirs. However, as a 2013 report by the Centre for Social Justice states, many seaside towns suffered as from the 1970s it became cheaper and easier for British tourists to travel abroad. Now, according to the Office for National Statistics, larger seaside towns in England suffer from higher-than-average levels of deprivation compared to the rest of the country. A general view of RAK's oyster farm off the coast of Ras Al Kaimah, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, May 28, 2013. Abdulla al-Suwaidi dreamed of reviving a long-lost part of Middle Eastern culture when he seeded his first oyster with a tiny bead and placed it in the warm waters of the Gulf in 2004. Almost a decade later, the co-founder and vice-chairman of RAK Pearls is finally seeing the fruits of his labours with the first auction of cultured pearls from RAK's oyster farm off the coast of Ras Al Kaimah. RAK Pearls, the region's only cultured pearl producer, now has some 40,000 oysters bedded down in the Gulf's briny waters and in June the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre Authority (DMCC) held an exclusive auction for some of its produce. Vendors selling toy buoys wait for their customers at a consumer goods wholesale market in Yiwu, Zhejiang province July 5, 2012. Yiwu, located 300 kilometres south of Shanghai in eastern China's prosperous Zhejiang province, is considered a bellwether for China's low-cost exports, especially to emerging markets. China's leaders have said the country's export sector needs to move up the export value chain towards higher value-added products - including capital goods like telecom equipment and industrial machinery - and away from low-end exports like toys and apparel. But this transition will take time. To match story CHINA-ECONOMY/YIWU. Picture taken July 5, 2012. REUTERS/Gabriel Wildau (CHINA - Tags: BUSINESS)
