Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
A man jumps off the Tower Bridge in London, United Kingdom, June 1, 2019. Reuters Photographer Alkis Konstantinidis: "I got a call from UK & Ireland Chief Photographer Dylan Martinez. "Welcome to London," he said, and asked me to head to Tower Bridge, where a man had climbed to the top. Access to the bridge was blocked off by the authorities, and a boat of rescuers from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution was on standby, ready to intervene. I made my way through nearby buildings and reached the banks of the Thames, where police were telling onlookers to move back in order to create a "free zone." I had to secure a position where I wouldn't be removed by police but still maintain a clear view. I stood there, eye in the viewfinder, and didn't move for several minutes. Suddenly, we heard a scream, followed by more screams. The man fell into the river. The fall lasted a couple of seconds and a thump echoed as he landed on his back. I didn't expect him to survive that fall with no injuries, but fortunately, as rescuers rushed towards him, he started swimming towards their boat." A mother bows before religious idols that Shaman Choi Kuing-hun believes in as he looks on at his house in Seongnam, south of Seoul, August 16, 2013. Anxious parents have long sought hints from fortune-tellers about how well their children will do in school. The shamans, men and women who perform traditional religious rites, say parents asking about their children's academic and career prospects - at 50,000 to 100,000 won ($45 to $90) an hour - usually take the advice they get very seriously. A woman speaks on the phone as she walks down a shopping street in Munich June 28, 2011. Contrasting fortunes tell the story of two Europes -- and the story of the euro itself. Euro zone membership plus low labour costs were supposed to be a winning combination for Greece. In those early days of the common currency, Germany was the sick man of Europe, weighed down by the costs of reunification and an expensive labour market. Since then, rising labour costs in Greece have forced many manufacturers to shift to Asia or eastern Europe, or even to countries like Germany, where productivity is much higher. Germany, meantime, has thrived. Now, Greece is the one facing hard times. Picture taken June 28, 2011. To match Special Report TWO-EUROPES/ REUTERS/Michaela Rehle (GERMANY - Tags: BUSINESS)

People relax in the sun in the Englischer Garten in Munich, June 28, 2011.
