U.S. marines stormed out of helicopters onto Golame Beach to rescue American, Turkish and Italian citizens from the chaos of Albania as many frantic Albanians attempted to jump onboard. Pictures of the Year: Caravans: the new face of migration
Maria Meza (C), a 40-year-old migrant woman from Honduras, part of a caravan of thousands from Central America trying to reach the United States, runs away from tear gas with her five-year-old twin daughters Saira Mejia Meza (L) and Cheili Mejia Meza (R) in front of the border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, in Tijuana, Mexico, November 25, 2018. Reuters Photographer Kim Kyung-Hoon: "After nearly two weeks of documenting the harrowing journey of a caravan of mostly Central American migrants headed towards the U.S.-Mexican border, I snapped a picture I will never forget. In the photo, Honduran mother Maria Meza grabs the thin arms of her two 5-year-old twin daughters Cheili and Saira as they frantically run from a tear gas canister next to the U.S-Mexico border barrier in Tijuana. Cheili is in diapers, Saira barefoot. Their mother is wearing a T-shirt from the Disney hit "Frozen," a movie I've seen many times with my own daughter. In the frantic moments after tear gas canisters hit the ground, the acrid smell engulfed the area. Children were crying, their eyes stung by the gas. The U.S. government said customs officers had used tear gas to stop a group of migrants who, they said, had violently attempted to cross the border. I did not see who fired the canister, but I heard the sound come from the direction of the border fence as I, too, broke into a run. It was one of the first of several tear gas canisters I saw being used by border agents. I did not witness migrants behaving violently, but we were in a large area and I could not see everything that was happening. It is not my place to say who is right and who is wrong. I just took a photo of what I saw happening in a given place and time." REUTERS/Kim Kyung-Hoon SEARCH "IMMIGRATION POY" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "REUTERS POY" FOR ALL BEST OF 2018 PACKAGES. A Picture and its Story: Honduran migrant flees tear gas with her children
Reuters photographer Kim Kyung-Hoon: "After nearly two weeks of documenting the harrowing journey of a caravan of mostly Central American migrants headed towards the U.S.-Mexican border, I snapped a picture I will never forget. In the shot, taken on Sunday, you can see Honduran mother Maria Meza, 40, grabbing the thin arms of her two 5-year-old twin daughters Cheili and Saira as they frantically run from a tear gas canister spewing fumes. Cheili is seen in diapers, Saira barefoot, while their mother wears a t-shirt showing the smiling sisters from the Disney hit "Frozen," a movie I've seen many times with my own daughter. Mesa's 12-year-old daughter, Jamie, is behind her mother in the photo, also running away from the approaching gas. In the frantic moments after the canisters hit the ground, the acrid smell was everywhere and I could see children crying, their eyes stung by the gas. "I thought I was going to die with them because of the gas," Meza told my Reuters colleagues a day later, adding that she was shocked U.S. border agents would fire the canisters near women and children. Meza's family had made it to the El Chapparal border crossing, which straddles the Mexican city of Tijuana and San Diego on the U.S. side, after leaving their home in the violent city of San Pedro Sula in northern Honduras two months ago. Meza and her children said they had already spent a week at a Tijuana shelter, but they will likely have to wait much longer for a chance to ultimately plead their case. She said she hopes to be granted asylum in the United States due to rampant crime back home, and if successful will travel to Louisiana, where the girls' father lives." A Picture and its Story: After 18 years, Ethiopian man finds his family in Eritrea
When Ethiopia and Eritrea went to war in 1998 and deported each other's nationals en masse, Addisalem Hadgu thought he had nothing to worry about, safe in the belief his Ethiopian passport would shield his Eritrean wife from expulsion. Two years later, as the conflict raged on in trenches along the common border, his wife, Nitslal Abraha, mysteriously disappeared along with their two daughters. Addisalem, an Ethiopian state TV journalist, embarked on a frantic search. A neighbour approached him several days later and handed him a letter from Nitslal in which she said she had left for Eritrea with Azmera and Danayt, who were teenagers at the time. The letter did not explain her reasons but Addisalem suspected that she, like millions of others on both sides of the conflict, had been swept by the patriotism and nationalism that engulfed both countries as bloodshed escalated. "One day, we may meet," the letter read. For 18 years, they didn't. There was no way to communicate - all transport links, phone and postal services had been severed since the start of conflict. But this month, a reunion became possible when the two governments - bitter foes for nearly two decades despite agreeing a ceasefire back in 2000 - signed a peace deal that ended a generation of hostility in a matter of days. The Wider Image: Manila's slums an endless battle for firefighters
One scorching afternoon this month, inhabitants of a slum in the Philippine capital frantically hurled buckets of water to try to save their homes from a raging fire. Six hours later, their efforts proved to no avail. There have been over 2,200 fires in Manila this year and the majority of these have occurred in slum areas, data from the Bureau of Fire Protection showed. In a country with a yawning wealth gap, the hardest hit are the hundreds of thousands of urban poor who call the shanties home. For the capital's thousands of firefighters, the slums are sprawling, unregulated tinderboxes. Tangles of drooping wires run from one electric post to another along the narrow alleys of the city's most neglected communities, crowded with shacks made from plywood and coconut tree lumber. Fire safety and building codes are unheard of. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the so-called informal settlers complicate efforts to save property and lives. Caleb Amisi Luyai an opposition politician of the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition, reacts after a gas canister fired by policemen hits his car during a protest along a street in Nairobi, Kenya, October 13, 2017. Baz Ratner: "I was lucky to get this picture. I was covering an opposition protest with Thomas Mukoya, the chief photographer for East Africa. I was riding a motorbike ahead of a convoy going to Nairobi's main street in defiance of a government ban on rallies in city centres. Suddenly, I heard the crack of teargas being fired by riot police. The police were stationed at almost every intersection to block the protesters. I pulled over to put on my gas mask and saw that one of the canisters had landed inside a nearby car. A man was leaning out the window choking on fumes and frantically trying to get out. The gas was so thick he couldn't see anything. As I ran to help open the door I managed to take a few photos. I didn't recognise the man but Thomas Mukoya later identified him as an opposition MP Caleb Amisi Luyai. Opposition protests were almost a daily occurrence during Kenya's long election season and police often disperse them with teargas or live rounds. Sometimes civilians were caught. Two days before I took the photos of the MP I saw a teargas canister land in a crowded bus. A woman was so desperate to escape she climbed out of the vehicle's back window." The Wider Image: Kabul mosque attack: four-year-old called to safety
A four-year-old boy photographed in a Kabul mosque last week as police desperately tried to call him to safety during an attack by Islamic State gunmen is back with his family but still suffering nightmares, his father said. Ali Ahmad was with his grandfather in the Shi'ite Imam Zaman mosque on Friday when at least two attackers in police uniforms stormed in, one exploding a suicide-bomb vest and the other firing indiscriminately at the hundreds of worshippers inside. He survived the attack but his grandfather was among at least 20 killed. Sayed Bashir, Ali's father, was nearby but not in the mosque when the initial blast was heard and immediately ran to check on his family. "Right after the explosion I thought everything was finished," he said. "I called my father's mobile phone number and my son answered and said: 'They killed grandpa'. He wanted me to bring the car and get him." "We were running everywhere in search of my son but the police were stopping us and didn't let us get too close," Bashir said. Bashir called the number again and was speaking to Ali when another explosion went off. "I lost hope. I said to myself that everything was finished. I tried the number again but it was switched off," Bashir said. In fact, Ali had run around behind the mosque, disregarding the policeman frantically signalling to him in the courtyard. He was rescued soon afterwards but the effects of the attack may take much longer to heal. Bashir, a building worker who lives in a district with many Shi'ite families, said Ali was still traumatized and having difficulty coming to terms with what happened. "After the incident, my son has some problems. He's scared a lot at night," he said. REUTERS/Omar Sobhani SEARCH "ALI AHMAD" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. 2016 Rio Olympics: Shooting Olympic history
Britain's Paula Radcliffe cries in a vehicle after retiring from the women's marathon in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games in Greece August 22, 2004. Yannis Behrakis: "The 2004 Olympics was a very special assignment for me since Athens is my town. The women's marathon was not an event I was initially going to cover. In fact, I had the morning off. On the morning of August 22, a colleague called me frantically to tell me that he had information that the favourite to win the race, the British athlete Paula Radcliffe, had retired about seven kilometres before the end of the 42km race. I took my equipment, jumped on my moped and drove through back roads and alleys - as all roads were blocked by police - to the place about ten blocks north of my home in Athens. When I arrived, Radcliffe was trying to continue the race but she looked totally overwhelmed by the heat and humidity. At some point she sat on a pavement crying. I shot some pictures, trying my very best not to be intrusive, she seemed lost and unaware. A few supporters holding British flags tried to comfort her. Shortly afterward a special vehicle arrived to collect her and a couple of other athletes. When she entered the vehicle, I guess, she had finally realised that it was all over and at that moment she collapsed. I shot two frames through the window."
