The Wider Image: NAFTA deal gives little help to U.S. dairy farmers
The dairy industry was a sticking point in the contentious renegotiations of the free trade deal between the U.S., Canada and Mexico that concluded last month. U.S. President Donald Trump demanded concessions from the protected Canadian dairy industry and said on Twitter that Canada was hurting U.S. farmers with high tariffs. After Canada gave some ground, Trump claimed a big victory and said farmers would have more export options. But Canada opened less than 4 percent of its dairy market to U.S. farmers - a concessions unlikely to make much of a dent in U.S. oversupply or improve the lot of farmers. In Canada, the dairy industry is faring much better and continues to be among the nation's most profitable farm sectors, allowing most farmers to absorb the concessions' impact. The Wider Image: In the Sierra Maestra, Castro revolution lives on
In the rugged Sierra Maestra mountains near where Fidel Castro made his hideout as he led a guerrilla uprising in the late 1950s, Cubans say they are still grateful for the land reforms and modern amenities his leftist revolution brought. Fidel Castro's younger brother Raul Castro, 86, steps down as president this week. His successor is likely to be 57-year-old Miguel Diaz-Canel, the first time that Communist-run Cuba has had a leader born after the 1959 revolution. In Santo Domingo, the hamlet closest to the "Comandancia La Plata" where the rebels had their military headquarters, locals say they owe much to the Castros' revolution, despite an ailing economy that Raul Castro's tentative market reforms have failed to fix. Title to land was given free of charge to former tenant farmers, farm labourers and sharecroppers. Many farmers then joined together to work under the umbrella of state and cooperative farms. The Cuban government also brought medical facilities, schools and paved roads to remote places like Santo Domingo, a village of several hundred inhabitants nestled in the wooded mountains by a river. The Wider Image: Iraq's Kerbala transformed for sacred Shi'ite ritual
Chanting and flailing themselves in mourning for Imam Hussein, hundreds of thousands of Shi'ite Muslims from around the world gather in the Iraqi city of Kerbala for one of the most sacred rituals in their religious calendar. Arbain marks the culmination of a 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Mohammed who was killed in a 7th century battle in Kerbala. Shi'ites believe his remains are entombed there. Exhausted pilgrims, including women carrying their children, marched long distances to reach the shrines. Many, arriving by air from Iran, Pakistan or Bahrain, had landed in Baghdad several days earlier. Kerbala, 80 km south of the capital, was cloaked in black because of the robes worn by pilgrims, and bedecked in a sea of flags. Groups of people build camps where they cook, share food with others, and display decorative objects. Banners featuring Imam HusseinÕs words are put up on walls and buildings. The ritual is a time for sorrow and self-reflection. Mourning Shi'ites listen to recollections of how Hussein and his family were killed. The theme of martyrdom dominates, as pilgrims gash their foreheads with swords and beat themselves with chains. Hussein's death is interpreted by Shi'ites as a symbol of the struggle against injustice and oppression. Tents have been set up in Kerbala to provide a resting place for pilgrims, where men serve them cups of free tea. Others offer free massages to those arriving on foot from different cities, while tailors work on religious flags at a market. REUTERS/Abdullah Dhiaa Al-deen SEARCH "IRAQ SHIITES" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Brexit: all bets off for Irish horse racing industry
Irish racehorse trainers and breeders fear a Brexit that impedes the free movement of animals could threaten its success on the track and position as Europe's largest producer of thoroughbreds. Ireland is widely considered the European Union member most at risk from next door Britain's exit from the bloc, potentially cutting its land route to mainland Europe for exports and hindering trade with its key UK market. Few sectors are as integrated as the two islands' racing and breeding industries that, according to Horse Racing Ireland, the national authority for thoroughbred racing, contribute over 1 billion euros a year to Ireland's 189-billion-euro economy. "Our fears are that if there any trade barriers or any tax or tariffs on movement of horses between Ireland and England, that could have a detrimental effect," said Henry Beeby, chief Executive of Goffs, Ireland's leading bloodstock sales company. Anniversary: Hong Kong: 20 years since the end of British rule
A small investor watches share prices inside a bank in Hong Kong, December 1, 1998. The 1997-98 Asian financial crisis triggered a market sell-off that led some emerging economies to impose trading controls or buy assets to calm investors. Hong Kong surprised markets with a $15 billion intervention in August 2008 to fend off speculative attacks. While Hong Kong would later have to defend its free market credentials, supporters say the intervention saved the city during the crisis.
