Fruit farmer Peter Schneider of Bornheim some 20 kilometers south of Cologne walks through his frozen apple tree plantation after the temperatures fell under zero degree March 24. The fruit farmer hosed the trees last night, after the weather forecast announced freezing temperatures, to protect his plantation from frostbite. Under a thin layer of frozen water the apple blossoms are insulated keeping their temperature of about plus two degrees Celsius as the outside temperature went way below freezing point.
