President Vladimir Putin may be criticised by the West for the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, but at home his public approval ratings have been boosted. The operation to seize the peninsula, hailed by Russian nationalists as "The Crimean Spring", led to an upsurge in what is called "military and patriotic education" of Russian youths. "Tomorrow begins today," reads the motto of a cadet school in Stavropol that was named after Alexei Yermolov, a 19th century Russian general who conquered the Caucasus for the Russian empire. Most cadets come from families of active Russian soldiers or officers from other security forces. REUTERS/Eduard Korniyenko SEARCH "KORNIYENKO TEENAGERS" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Women's orchestra in Kabul
A member of the Zohra orchestra, an ensemble of 35 women, plays for fun as she walks around at Afghanistan's National Institute of Music, in Kabul, Afghanistan April 9, 2016. Playing instruments was banned under Taliban rule in Afghanistan, and even today, many conservative Muslims frown on most forms of music. Living in an orphanage in the capital, Kabul, 19-year-old Negin Ikhpolwak leads an ensemble of 35 women that plays both Western and Afghan musical instruments. In a country notorious internationally for harsh restrictions on women in most areas of life, Negin's story highlights a double challenge. Motorcyclists react after their motorbikes were confiscated by police on a highway in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, September 14, 2014. Crowds of small motorbikes ridden by racers - or "Mat Rempit", as they are known in Malaysian slang - face off in impromptu races in the Malaysian capital after dark. The decades-old culture is widely frowned upon by largely conservative Malaysians, who fear its potential to encourage gambling, drug abuse, snatch thefts and sexual promiscuity.
