The Wider Image: Romania's Roma culture seeks stage
Inside the grey walls of an independent theatre in the northwest Romanian city of Cluj, Roma actress Elena Duminica braided the hair of her colleague Mihaela Dragan ahead of their show. As she braided, the theatre tested the lights for the play, "Gadjo Dildo", a cabaret-like performance inspired by real stories about the sexism and racism Roma women are often subject to in Romania. It is the first play staged by the Romanian feminist Roma theatre company Giuvlipen, which Dragan co-founded in 2014 because, she saw no alternative for the way Roma people were represented in the arts. "We advocate for Roma artists to have a voice, because Roma art was pretty marginalised and never valued, always stereotyped. I think this is our role, to make Roma art mainstream and cool, so that people come to our shows and talk about them." REUTERS/Andreea Campeanu SEARCH "CAMPEANU ROMA" FOR THIS STORY. Pornsak Bowornsrisuk pulls an umbrella towards him to shield his head of thick grey hair from the blazing sunshine at the Bangkok bus terminal he manages. "You've got to be damned tough to do this job," says the 63-year-old, who records bus arrivals and departures, and tots up fares collected from journeys across Thailand's capital. The World Bank estimates the working-age population will shrink by 11 percent by 2040, the fastest contraction among Southeast Asia's developing countries. Thailand's stage of economic development, the rising cost of living and education, and a population waiting longer to get married are among the reasons it is ageing more quickly than its neighbours. An effective contraception programme in the 1970s also played a part, said Sutayut Osornprasop, a human development specialist at the World Bank in Thailand. Picture taken February 3, 2016. Obama's hair has become visibly greyer since he was first sworn into office on January 20, 2009 as a 47-year-old. Now, over four years into a presidency which has been marked by issues including bitter partisan struggles in Washington, a sluggish economy and the ongoing war in Afghanistan, his hair is noticeably more flecked with white. Obama has joked about his changing hair, including at the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 27, 2013 when he commented: "Time passes.
