Catherine Bickford puts flowers on the lapel of her seventeen year-old daughter Megan’s coat before Megan’s high school prom, at their home in Paris, Maine, U.S., May 15, 2021. Just a couple of months ago, Bickford said, the possibility of an in-person track meet and a senior prom seemed unthinkable. Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
A crow attacks a bat in central Kyiv, Ukraine, September 15, 2020. Reuters photographer Gleb Garanich: "The crow fixed its beady gaze on me as I snapped its picture, the wing of a bat firmly gripped in its beak. Capturing this shot in the beautiful morning light of Kiev confirmed my belief that stories about the animal world need not only be found in the wild. I was on my way to cover a protest near the Ukrainian parliament and had deliberately left 90 minutes ahead of time as I like to take pictures early in the morning in the centre of Kiev. When I heard a cry and a flapping of wings, I turned in the direction of the noise, raising my telephoto lens, and saw a crow attacking something in the branches of a tree. In the next instant, a bat flew out of the branches, chased by the crow. The bat fell to the ground, hissing at the crow, which continued to attack it. I drove the crow away, but the bat was lying in the grass and could not fly off. I carefully lifted it and carried it to another tree at the end of the alley, placing it on a branch, and went on with my day. This shot reminds me that a photographer should always be alert to what is happening around them, ready to take a picture at any moment." Stanley Joseph, the groom, who works as a driver for an NGO, tries to remove bride Daphne Gerard's garter from underneath her dress, as their bridesmaids look on, during a wedding game, after getting married in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, February 14, 2019. Gerard wondered if they should postpone their big day when it became clear a majority of their guests would not make it, due to the violent unrest that had gripped Port-au-Prince for months. Joseph felt they could make it work, although that meant chartering a plane to bring Gerard's parents up from the country's south-east. "We always have problems in Haiti. You can't wait. You just have to get on and overcome them," said Joseph. "I was stressed but happy." REUTERS/Valerie Baeriswyl SEARCH "HAITIAN WEDDINGS BAERISWYL" FOR THIS STORY.
