Victoria Ochante, 65, rests at her home after work in the shanty town Ticlio Chico in Villa Maria del Triunfo on the outskirts of Lima March 6, 2012. Ochante came from the highlands of Ayacucho 30 years ago and has been trying to make a living for the past year by recycling garbage. She hopes to make enough money by collecting bottles, cans and other recyclable objects so she can get a gynaecological operation. Older adults, especially women, who do not have retirement plans are forced to develop strategies for survival, otherwise they will be economically dependent and socially vulnerable, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Information.
