A man participates in a drag performance at Mayak, a gay cabaret club in Sochi, south western Russia October 28, 2013. During Soviet times, Sochi gained a reputation for tolerance but the city's once vibrant gay scene has been shrinking since Russia won the right to host the 2014 Winter Games. This year President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning the spread of "gay propaganda" among minors. His increasingly conservative social agenda has boosted the role of the Russian Orthodox Church, whose leader has suggested homosexuality is one of Russia's biggest threats, and given more air time to anti-homosexual rhetoric on media outlets. The new law has focused attention on Sochi, which will host many foreigners as well as Russians during the Olympics. Some activists have called for a boycott of the Games in protest. Antonio Acuna, 7, plays dress up with a wig and high heel shoes outside the factory where he lives with his family after the postponement of the demolition of their homes in Madrid November 7, 2013. Acuna belongs to one of the 13 families, all related, who are at risk of having their homes demolished by orders of Madrid's Town Hall. The families, whose members are mostly unemployed, have lived in a former paint factory as well as in shacks they built themselves for the past ten years. They say they have not been offered any housing alternatives by Madrid's Town Hall and they are evicted to make way for future plans to build a road on the land they occupy. The demolition of their homes was postponed at the last minute thanks to the Victims' Mortgage Platform (PAH). The graffiti reads, "Stop demolitions". Visitors view the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibit, "Punk: Chaos to Couture," in New York, May 6, 2013. With their black leather, studded jackets, ripped jeans, bondage trousers and messages of rebellion and anarchy, punks from the 1970s probably never envisioned that a major museum would be celebrating their influence on fashion 40 years later. But the Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art is doing just that with a new exhibition, "Punk: Chaos to Couture," that opens on May 9 and runs through Aug. 14.
