Buildings, including some under construction, are seen beyond the marina at Zaitunay Bay in Beirut
Buildings, including some under construction, are seen beyond the marina at Zaitunay Bay in Beirut August 19, 2014. Some travellers want to see history, others want to live it. In Lebanon, a slice of land between the Mediterranean and war-ravaged Syria, you can do a lot of both. In Beirut, the civil-war-era gunmen who used to patrol the seaside corniche are long gone, replaced by hairy-chested men playing bat and ball or women in full makeup jogging down the strip, some dragging their chihuahuas. Saint-George Yacht Club & Marina, on one side of the corniche and in the heart of Beirut, opened in the 1930s. Little remains of the main building after a bomb in 2005 ripped out its interior and killed former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. But the Lebanese are resilient and the club has stayed open. Bulgarian imam Hairi Sherifov leads a training session of his soccer team in the town of Rudozem, some 280 km (174 miles) southeast of Sofia November 19, 2012. Citing confiscated Islamic literature and witness statements, prosecutors say Bulgarian imam Said Mutlu and 12 other religious leaders and activists including Sherifov in southwest Bulgaria had been on Al Waqf-Al Islami's monthly payroll to spread radical ideas. All deny any wrongdoing and many of the witnesses questioned have changed their statements in the courtroom. The case, combined with the bombing of a bus carrying Israeli tourists this summer, has highlighted splits in society. Picture taken November 19, 2012.
