An illustration picture shows a kit to test for the presence of pork in food for use by Muslims, with small test tubes in which a food sample is mixed with warm water and test strips, at the company Capital Biotech offices in Asnieres sur Seine October 21, 2014. Two French entrepreneurs have launched a portable device to test for the presence of pork in food for use by Muslims who abide by dietary laws. With France's five million Muslims making up about eight percent of the overall population, the test, similar in size to a pregnancy test, aims to help consumers detect traces of pork not just in food, but also in cosmetics or medicines. A "halal certified" sign is seen at a display of steamed rice at a dining hall in the Kanda University of International studies, as Cahyani Ariya Wiji, a 21-year-old Muslim foreign student from Indonesia, looks at a lunch menu, in Chiba, east of Tokyo May 13, 2014. In the last few years, growing middle-class wealth has spawned a new genre of Muslim travellers who pursue leisurely escapes to atypical destinations like Japan, China and Thailand. The tallest hurdle for these new destinations is convincing Muslim tourists that the food they consume is halal. A recent survey shows that Japan has exhibited the greatest effort among 60 travel destinations in making itself Muslim-friendly over the past year. From publishing a travel guide for Muslims to installing prayer rooms at some airports, Japan is fast working its way up an annual halal vacation poll. The big increase in Muslim travellers highlights the urgency for non-Muslim countries to be more halal-compliant. To match story HALAL-FOOD/MALAYSIA Picture taken May 13, 2014.
