KNYAZHYTSY, Belarus
Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
Belarusian shepherd Alexey Usikov, 33, drives a horse-drawn carriage equipped with a battery, head lights and a small potbelly stove, which he crafted out of an old Audi-80 and which he jokingly calling it an Audi-40 as he used only a half of the car, in the village of Knyazhytsy, Belarus May 28, 2020. Reuters photographer Vasily Fedosenko: "Cowherd Alexey Usikov often has to brave inclement weather while tending to his herd at a collective farm in eastern Belarus. On a neighbour's suggestion, he decided to convert his old Audi 80 into an 'all-weather' cart by connecting half of it to a horse-drawn shaft. The result? A rough-and-ready home on wheels that protects Usikov from the rain. His 'Audi-40', as he jokingly calls the improvised half of the original car, is equipped with a battery, headlights, radio, and even a tiny potbelly stove that provides warmth and on which he makes coffee. Usikov has welded the cart's body where necessary, repainted it, and lubricates and pumps the wheels. "It gives you pleasure to ride a well-maintained cart," he said. I wanted one photo that would show the inimitable self-made horse-drawn carriage against the backdrop of Usikov's village. Such a moment presented itself at the end of his shift, when he handed over cow-tending duties to his brother and went home. A steep hill allowed for a top-down shot capturing the two horses pulling the unusual vehicle past an ordinary village house." Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
Bolivia's President and current presidential candidate for the Movement for Socialism (MAS) party Evo Morales offers fruit to residents on a street in Shinahota in the Chapare region, Bolivia, October 19, 2019. Reuters Photographer Ueslei Marcelino: "I'd been covering Evo Morales' final days campaigning. The day before the Bolivian election we visited the small town where Morales was born politically. The president was due to arrive in Villa Tunarri in the late afternoon and spend the night before voting the next day. We were waiting for the presidential entourage by the side of the highway back. I noticed the cars slowing and I guessed the president would get out to greet people, so I ran over to photograph. Many people surrounded him to greet him next to a roadside fruit market. He bought a lot of fruit from the vendor and shared it. Morales offered oranges to his staff and our cameraman. The president was in a good mood. One person handed President Morales some pineapple. He looked at me and walked towards me as I photographed him. He held out his hand offering me a piece of pineapple. Smiling, he said that I also had to eat, drawing laughter from everyone. I said, 'Gracias Presidente' picking up the fruit. I was surprised, but I didn't stop shooting. I ate the fruit while the president continued talking to those who had gathered. A few minutes later he said goodbye and headed for the town. The challenge of covering a presidential campaign is photographing the candidates' moments of intimacy and this moment with Morales achieved that. He was comfortable in front of the camera and acted very naturally. Here in Brazil, the word pineapple is used in an expression about tricky problem-solving. People in difficult situations might say, 'All thatÕs left for me is to peel the pineapple'." REUTERS/Ueslei Marcelino/File Photo SEARCH "POY STORIES 2019" FOR THIS STORY. Amel Tajeldin, 41, a housewife and mother of four, poses for a photograph in Khartoum, Sudan, June 26, 2019. Tajeldin said she would take turns with her husband to watch the children so that she could go out and protest. "While it was his turn to look after the children, I took part in the demonstrations," she said. She used to teach songs to street children in a makeshift tent at the sit-in. On June 3, members of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces shouted at her and other protesters and told them to run, she said. "We ran. We were surrounded by soldiers and policemen," she said. Both her arms are now wrapped in bandages. "While we were running, they beat us. To protect my head, I used my hands. This is why my two arms are broken," she said. "The ones like us beaten by police were lucky, the ones beaten by RSF members were brutally injured." REUTERS/Umit Bektas SEARCH "SUDAN WOMEN" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES.

In the distance we could see a huge group of people. But they weren't moving. It was 4 p.m. in the afternoon with only two hours of daylight left. So we decided to move towards them. It took us about an hour along the muddy path, meeting border guards and persuading them to let us pass. Then we saw thousands of refugees just sitting there, with more Bangladeshi border guards telling us to go back. We could see something was going on behind the crowd. So we waited for an opportunity to move closer, and that's when we saw them. The crowd was sitting on a riverbank and behind them, about three metres below, in the river itself, there were just hundreds of refugees coming across every minute. It was non-stop. There was no end to the people. People carrying babies. Elderly people being escorted through the water and mud, more than knee-deep. And we were just photographing everyone coming towards us. Then this woman appeared. She got to the point where she needed to get up to the footpath where we were. But she was exhausted. Two refugee men on her level were trying to push her up, which was when we reached out to help. Reuters photographer, Adnan Abidi, took a hand. Another photographer took another and I got her leg when she got within range. It was a case of dragging her. She lay there for a few minutes. I have no idea what happened to her. You are there trying to do your job with a camera in your hand. And then your heart overrules your head." REUTERS/Hannah McKay/File photo SEARCH "POY ROHINGYA" FOR THIS STORY. Pictures of the Year: The battle against Islamic State
An Iraqi soldier from the 9th Armoured Division gives drops of water to a dehydrated child rescued earlier by soldiers at the frontline, during the ongoing fighting between Iraqi forces and Islamic State militants near the Old City in western Mosul, Iraq, June 13, 2017. Erik De Castro: "We arrived at the frontline with the 9th Iraqi army division and went up on a rooftop to take pictures of the Grand al-Nuri mosque and its landmark minaret, still in the hands of Islamic State in western Mosul. That's when we spotted civilians fleeing the tightening noose around the Islamic State militants by scrambling through a hole in a wall of a school across the road. The day was blazing hot, with temperatures reaching 40 Celsius with no breeze. The people emerging from western Mosul into the relative safety of government-held territory were suffering from heat exhaustion. With mortar shells exploding all around, an Iraqi soldier passed one small boy of probably no more than seven through the hole, unconscious, his head lolling back, his gaunt-looking body unnaturally hot. Tim, our security adviser, received him and, fearing the boy was suffering from dangerous heat stroke, carried him across the broken ground to find shade. The boy came round and started crying, and soldiers came to pour water on his head, chest and feet to cool him down. He gulped at the sips they gave him to drink and they found him a blue-coloured rug to lie on. An infant in a similar condition was then handed through the hole in the wall and placed beside the boy on the rug. Soon afterwards, the mother of the boy made it through the hole." A Picture and its Story: Reaching out to rescue a Rohingya woman
Hannah McKay was on her first foreign assignment photographing Rohingya Muslims in refugee camps in Bangladesh. Then she and other photographers heard around 5,000 more people were heading to the area, trying to find their way across the border from neighbouring Myanmar. Here is her account of what happened next: "We were standing, looking out over paddy fields and grasslands Ð lots of water and one thin path leading to the border with Myanmar. In the distance we could see a huge group of people. But they werenÕt moving. It was 4 oÕclock in the afternoon with only two hours left of daylight. So we decided to move towards them. Another Reuters photographer, Adnan Abidi, took a hand. Another photographer took another and I got her leg when she got within range. It was a case of dragging her.
