Afghan archeologist cleans a headless Buddha statue discovered inside an ancient temple in Mes Aynak
An Afghan archeologist cleans a headless Buddha statue discovered inside an ancient temple in Mes Aynak, Logar province February 14, 2015. China and Afghanistan remain deadlocked over a stalled $3 billion copper mine five months after Beijing demanded royalties be slashed by almost a half, underlining Kabul's struggles to support itself as foreign aid dries up. The copper, lying beneath the ancient Buddhist ruins of Mes Aynak, is one of the world's largest untapped deposits. But the project has been mired in delays since state-run China Metallurgical Group Corp (MCC) won the contract to develop it in 2007. Resurgent Taliban insurgents have tightened control over the area around Aynak, and after threats, rocket attacks and the risk of land mines, MCC withdrew its Chinese workers from the heavily guarded copper camp last year. And then there are the Buddhist ruins. Archeological work to preserve treasures from the crumbling monastries and stupas is dangerous and slow, and must be finished before mining can begin. A child holds an image of Our Lady of Aparecida, Brazil's national saint, during a mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida in the city of Aparecida, 165 km (103 miles) east of Sao Paulo October 12, 2011. The Basilica is Latin America's most popular shrine and one of the world's largest cathedrals. The shrine dates back to 1717, when three fishermen having a run of bad luck cast their nets in the Paraiba River and dragged up a headless statue of the Virgin Mary, venerated as Our Lady of Aparecida and named Brazil's national saint in 1930. Every year millions of Brazilian and foreign pilgrims visit the shrine and about 100,000 people usually attend services in Aparecida commemorating her every October 12.
