The Wider Image: Without papers, Uighurs fear for their future in Turkey
Without work or residency permits in Turkey and unable to renew their Chinese passports, Qurbanjan Nourmuhammed and his family live in uncertainty in Istanbul, cut off from their son who returned to Xinjiang three years ago. Nourmuhammed, his wife and five children came to Turkey in 2015, facing increased pressure from China to abandon Islamic practices such as wearing a headscarf, growing a beard and closing their restaurant for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. China has faced growing international criticism for setting up facilities that United Nations experts describe as detention centres holding more than one million Uighurs and other Muslims. Beijing says it needs the measures to stem the threat of Islamist militancy, and calls them vocational training centres. REUTERS/Murad Sezer SEARCH "SEZER NOURMUHAMMED" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Myanmar blogger battles bias with beauty campaign
Muslims in Buddhist-majority Myanmar usually keep a low profile for fear of intimidation, but Win Lae Phyu Sin, one of the community's rare bloggers on beauty care, has gone the other way. The 19-year-old was the centre of attraction at a recent launch of beauty products in Yangon, her striking multi-coloured makeup offset by a long-sleeved green-and-white gown and matching hijab, a headscarf worn by some Muslim women. "I don't regret my decision to wear the hijab," the blogger said. "Our God opens many ways for me. Hijab is like a key for me. I can use it to go where I want to go, and do what I want." Zeynep Arslan poses for a picture during an interview with Reuters in Istanbul, June 13, 2018. Picture taken June 13, 2018. Zeynep Arslan, a volunteer for the opposition Islamist Saadet (Felicity) Party, has been wearing a Muslim headscarf since she was 12 - a right which Erdogan's government championed - but she faults him for his foreign policy. "Because I'm wearing the scarf, this doesn't mean that I must ignore the country's problems. This government allows me to cover my head, but it doesn't sever relations with Israel," she said. Arslan, however, says Erdogan's supporters are too quick to condemn all opposition as traitors, making life almost unbearable. "There is immense pressure on us. We are living in a society which is similar to George Orwell's 1984," she said. REUTERS/Umit Bektas

Rohingya refugee Senuwara Begum, 16, adjusts her headscarf outside her family's makeshift shelter at Balukhali refugee camp near Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, December 1, 2017. Senuwara Begum lost her right leg after she got shot in the thigh, above the knee, when her village Shahab Bazar, in Maungdaw district, Myanmar, was attacked and burned to the ground by the Myanmar military at the end of August, her father, Sayedul Rahaman, says. Rahaman, a 60-year-old farmer, carried her on his back for six days to cross the Myanmar-Bangladesh border. “We could see dead bodies as we were running away. We were hiding in the bushes because we didn’t want the soldiers to find us, but I knew I had to rush if I wanted to save her life,” Rahaman says. He used natural remedies along the way to try to protect the wound, but it had gotten infected and doctors at a hospital in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, told them there was no other option but to amputate the leg. Senuwara was devastated. “She had come to terms with dying, but not living with one leg,” her father says. Rahaman is very concerned about his daughter’s future. “I don’t know what will become of her. Who’s going to marry a girl with only one leg? In a way, she’s half dead.” Picture taken December 1, 2017. REUTERS/Susana Vera

"I am a humanist and a patriot. I had serious problems because of my headscarf while I was a student and then as an academic at the university hospital. I had friends wearing headscarves who left school and had mental problems. I am grateful to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan because under his rule I was aware again that I was human.
